I was diagnosed with depression like years ago when i was 12. I sometimes vent on Tumblr and I often get called an attention whore. I really fucking hate people who say they're depressed over stupid shit. It's insulting.

I know what you mean, but suicide is the 3rd leading cause for death in 15-24 year olds. 1 in 5 teens have diagnosed depression. I am, but I hate it. I hate having to take medication to make me feel "normal". I hate people who go "I'm so depressed we got homework" or who say depression isn't real. but this stamp makes EVERY case of teenage depression seem fake, like it's normal to feel suicidal and have all symptoms of this illness. I've never heard of anyone who thought it was cool to have depression or faked it.
It kind of sounds like the stamp is saying that it's typical teen angst, when in many cases it really isn't.

I do find it a pain seeing these kids using mental illnesses like a fashion accessory. These diseases are not fun to have! They do not get you attention or special treatment; you get ridicule and are picked on for having one.
Stupid kids. How 'unique' do they think it is to claim to have depression or any of the other disorders when just about everyone they know is doing it?!?
However I'm reluctant to say that all of them are faking depression. Depression is a bit common in teens; in fact some experts think it might be under-diagnosed. I was dismissed as a moody or whiny teen for a year when I had my first episode of depression. I don't want to do that to anyone else. If they seem upset, you should take it somewhat seriously. (Being upset doesn't equal depression though) It's not fun to have your feelings invalidated.
I still got a laugh out of your stamp though! All teens seem to go thru an angst-y phase, and it can be fairly irritating where you do feel like beating the snot out of them. At least most of them grow out of it.

I know what you mean, but I got diagnosed with mental illnesses and I don't go parading around telling everyone. It's not fun to have to take medication. Depression is VERY common it teens; 1 in 5 have it statistically. Saying that ALL teens are like this is stereotyping, just like stereotyping depression. I'm 15 btw.
But I know what you mean. If I hear another person go "I'm so depressed my parents didn't let me go out last night" I will actually scream. And that goes for any mental illness. I wasn't trying to be rude though.

THANKS FOR THIS! i've had my first suicidal thoughts when i was seven years old. i will get the random urge to curl up and cry every once in a while. i can't make a lot of friends because they think i'm a whiny, attention whoring bitch. depression fucking sucks. it's an issue people have to live with, like diabetes, NOT a lifestyle choice.

I fuckin' no what this is about.. I once had a "friend" who kept belittling my slight symptoms of depression (I am diagnosed to have them) with: "Yeah yeah, but guess what happened to ME! This is far worse!" She was HORRIBLE person and when she claimed that I had ruined her life after I had done absolutely NOTHING to her I realized what a little psycho she was!

LOL Yes.
My friend has depression (I was diagnosed just recently too), and she seems a little whiny. Not that I can blame her, she has major family problems, lives with her aunt, and her aunt is a total bitch.
But SHE has a friend who is the whiniest person I've ever talked to. Whinier than an uncomfortable 4 year old.
As for me, I'm actually embarrassed about it. I'm only talking here because to me, you are faceless. <3 I know you have your own life and it must be very interesting, but sadly there is this small moment of interaction, then we both go on with our lives and never interact again.

I HATE people who fake this shit. It's fucking insulting.
I'm not a fake. I may not have depression at all. It may just be a very very very deep angst. Whatever it is, I feel it. And I'm so fed up with people who flaunt this type of stuff as if it's the latest fad like Bieber or sagging pants.
Thank you so much for making this ^^

These people are the reason that, when I went to my father telling him I needed help, he told me that it was normal teenage angst and that I should get over it.
The next time I hear of someone faking an attempt, I want to kill them myself and save them the trouble.

Some people don't know how good they have it. My grandma and mom had to live through half of their lives without medication, and my sister has been struggling with it since she was seven. Before I was diagnosed, it took my mom some two or three months to realize it wasn't just 'angst'. *looks for brass knuckles*

Why should a person ever have to pretend to have suicidal thoughts to gain attention?
I guess this is coming from my lack of contact in real life with someone who faked it,
but I think if their that desperate for attention, someone should listen.

Some people just don't know how to interact.
Don't just shun them.
Although in a different way, I used to lack some social common sense, so obviously I annoyed some people. It would help these people more if you showed them respect and, I don't know, converse.

What you're not understanding is that people can and do demand attention without actually needing help. Not everyone has MΓΌnchausen syndrome. :/
Since suicide and depression has become a joke and fashion statement, it's not considered serious anymore to fake it. Which makes it hard for real people to get help.

But there are actually teenagers who have depression. From what I'm getting from this stamp, it sounds like you're saying teenagers can't be depressed because any teenager who says they have depression are just looking for attention. My depression happened to begin in my teen years, and I wasn't looking for attention. In fact, I loathe attention, being the introverted person I am. I just became depressed due to my dad dying. Yes, I know being sad over someone who died is called "mourning", but my mourning escalated to depression. And last year (at age 19), I was actually diagnosed with depression.

I'm going to admit I think I fall somewhere in the middle, but I don't cut myself and show it around to people like ~Karasmileyface said, but I usually get upset over the silliest things; and I think hormones would also contribute to that. :/ Hmm.

I've been depressed for a while now. (Not to get 'attention' and not too far to 'kill myself', I would never do that.) That's only because I've been having family problems.
It CAN be serious when a teenager pretends to be depressed. But sometimes, they just don't know how it can put their family and friends in danger by faking it.
I agree with you. I'll use this stamp when I get a membeship.

Karasmileyface [2010-08-08 02:49:56 +0000 UTC]
I do admit that I can be a bit of an attention whore sometimes, but I mean, there is a line to be drawn. I don't cut myself or go around showing people (just an example I yanked from the comments). I don't know if depression is really entirely my issue, but I've been different in some way my whole life.
While you can't say people are faking it, because they're typically not, there are people who really need to get over themselves.
Not trying to start an argument or debate, just felt like commenting.

I can relate to this from both sides. When I was 12 I wanted attention but when I was 15 I was so depressed when I was out I would think of how I'd kill myself when I got home. Just let the attention whores do their thing, theyll realize eventually how serious it is.

Ouch. Kind of a controversial subject. While many teens show signs of depression... ah, forget the rant. Teenagers whine and bitch and moan. It's the hormones and the angst. It makes me feel bad for the ones that truly suffer from depression.

I love you. My gripe with the scene morns is that they flaunt problems and issues that insult those who have actually gone through them. I know of no one who flaunted their depression! Me, I'm just starting to talk about my own, and it certainly doesn't help to have these whiny idiots going on about how much they hate their lives and want to die...fucking attention whores.

The intent wasn't "no teenager is ever serious about depression".
The intent was "the teenagers who fake it and pretend they're depressed or suicidal for attention make it impossible for the ones who really mean it to be taken seriously".
π: 0 β©: 1
CaptainDesertPirate In reply to Spikytastic [2010-04-30 02:57:10 +0000 UTC]
How can you honestly tell when someone is faking it?
Threats of suicide are always a serious matter, and treating them like they aren't causes a lot of people to ignore the warning signs, leading to a lot of preventable suicides.
If you treat people who proclaim to be depressed and suicidal, and I'm talking about therapy and counseling not pushing meds, then you can lessen their risk of suicide and improve their condition.
Teenagers do get depressed at high rates. Just because they might seem whiny about it doesn't mean that are faking it for attention. Giving them some positive attention might just make them less depressed.
I'm not saying freak out and call mental health services every time someone is sad, but try getting them to cheer up instead of shoving them off to the side and telling them no one cares.

Spikytastic In reply to CaptainDesertPirate [2010-04-30 03:04:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, because I can so easily take the kids who threaten suicide and self-harm every time someone criticizes them seriously.
There are a lot of kids who are quite blatantly just doing it for the attention-- the sort who run around showing their cutting scars with pride and talking so constantly and cheerfully about how they've tried to kill themselves.
So sue me if I'm a bit annoyed that my friends don't take me seriously because they're used to everyone who says they're "depressed" acts like that, so they can't take it seriously when the people who actually are are trying to get help from them.
Face it: in today's society, it's becoming more and more "trendy" to be mentally ill, and when it's a fashion statement among a certain sect of idiots, you don't take it seriously when there are people who actually need help.
It's not about "teenagers are never suicidal and all their problems are just whining".
I never once said or implied that. I'd take up to task anyone who did, because I'm a teenager and I suffer from depression. I've gone through suicide ideation. I know perfectly well that it can be real.
But when it's being turned into a fashion statement and a "LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!" ploy...

I don't think any teenager should even go to the doctor's to be diagnosed with depression unless it's very serious. Every teen, including myself, is whiny and angsty. It's called hormones/the teenage years. :I
