It's rather last-minute and not great :/

This is the scene in Shades of Gray when Cujo finds his squeaky toy at the end. Assuming that his obsession is the toy, and obsessions are what keeps ghosts "alive"... Cujo would've had quite the shock grabbing that toy. In my headcanon, he just barely stayed formed afterward, and subconsciously changed his obsession from finding his toy, to Danny. (This can explain why he's always bothering Danny and acting like Danny's his owner in fanfics)
