"Come on, just one more stride, I know it's hard..."
Julie kept applying pressure with the inner leg and could feel how Santyana was jumping against it.
This was currently her fear lection number one: The counter canter. The mare made one more long stride until she lifted her butt and decided it was time for a flying lead change. Again.
"Oh honey, come on, this is Second Level, not Grand Prix!"
Julie sighed and slowed down to a loose walk. Santyana chewed on her snaffle and took the short break to snort loudly. The problem was that her canter was a bit too balanced and her mind was a bit too fast - she decided to end the counter canter every time they reached a corner.
It simpy felt wrong for her to do anything else, since she had done flying lead changes without even noticing since she was 4. How should Julie explain to her that this was the challenge - to keep the lead even if it felt wrong?

Anyways, they had started warming up 30 minutes ago and it was time to get to the arena.

Minutes later they had started their performance. Santyana did fine in the trot work and her extended canter was a pleasure to watch, powerful and wide-paced. The collected trot still needed a bit of refinement, but she was still in the game for a top placing since there was no major mistake. Not yet.
After a walk round they started cantering again and Julie was sure, Santyana knew what was about to come.
"Dear horsegod, please, please make her stop thinking. Just for this moment..."
It was time. They changed circles in the middle of the arena.

Jep, that's Santyana starting her dressage career.

Right now I'm so happy that I never have to look at this peace again... Started it weeks ago but couldn't find the motivation to get it done.
