Description Adding in the red engine from “Sad Story of Henry.” Eagle, formerly of the Midland Railway, then the LMS, then BR, and finally back to Sir Topham Hatt’s railway as NWR #45!

Eagle, who was originally named Winston, was built in 1899 in the Vulcan Foundry and spent his earliest years in the midlands. When construction on a railway network on the island of Sodor began, Winston answered the call and volunteered to assist. Working alongside Thomas and Edward, as well as several other loaned out engines, Winston greatly enjoyed the work.

When construction was completed in 1914, most of the other engines went home, but the Midland Railway wasn’t in a particular rush to have Winston back, and so allowed him to stay longer.

Sharp-eyed fans of the Thin Clergyman’s books might recognize him in the picture in “The Sad Story of Henry,” as he was the engine that tried to push him out of the tunnel.

The incident caused a mechanical abnormality in his steam release, which caused his valves to make a sound akin to the call of an eagle whenever he let off steam. Winston soon found himself being called “Eagle” by the passengers, and took a liking to the nickname, and thus it soon stuck.
