Description so this is my entry for 's "not-a-horse equine" contest. see details here: [link]

basically, the point of the contest is to create a manipulation with a central subject that is an equine animal, but not a horse or pony. that includes mules, donkeys, zebras, and the like.

for mine, i explored sub-species of zebras because i love them but wanted to find something a little different. i also looked into the evolutionary forefathers of horses, zebras, and donkeys. the combination of the two brought me to the quagga. sweet, huh? basically, they're a recently extinct (-sadface-) sub-species of the zebra. the last one died in a london zoo in 1870. here's the wikipedia article: [link]

anyway, i am always so sad to hear about extinct species i wish i could've seen while they were around...and this one's just so awesome-looking, that i had to pay a little tribute. i read that they're most closely related to the burchell's zebra, so i used a stock photo of one of those and colored/edited it as needed to make it look more like a quagga. i decided to proceed with a focus on the idea of being the last living member of a group or species, and came up with this. i hope you like it!

this is my first time doing a non-horse equine subject, but i figured it was the perfect opportunity to start out.

overall, i'm pleased with it. whether or not it does well in the contest, i'm quite content this time around. what a rare treat that is!

please, leave comments and view all you wish...but please don't steal!

stock credits are on the piece.

Oh yay! Someone else made a quagga! I kept hoping someone would hit on that as an option.

I definetly agree! I was hoping that someone would do a quagga, its not like they went extinct THAT long ago.

Know what could even be cooler? If someone did the dawn horse! lol

i definitely went into it hoping to do something prehistoric, honestly...but i had to rein myself in, haha. if i'd chosen something long-extinct (like, a founding species), i would've had to draw basically the whole thing...and i was not too confident in my ability to do that without practicing first, and i just wanted to get it done! haha. but i'd love to do something like that in the future; for now, i just chose something that would be an interesting challenge with a unique result.

Quagga's are beautiful animals. I heard they're trying to bring them back by breeding zebra's with light stripes. Whether or not it's true, I don't know.

Sorry to butt in here but..... letting you know yes they are trying to bring it back but not by breeding lighter stripes,(cause that would just be another zebra) But they have some DNA and are crossing it with other types of zebras. Or something like that anyway.
