Precursor Robots are one of the best in-game characters (although they aren't presented as such) any game could have. Their appearance alone is just amazing!

man I always loved the precursor robots. they're so archaic and yet to mystically modern.

it says "Shiva." Shiva is one of the principal deities of Hinduism and is often called "the Destroyer."

awesome work. Although i have always wondered why the Precursors made all thier war machines and statues to look like highly evolved mosquitos? Always has perplexed me. I mean, its obvious that the Dark Makers from Jak 3 had a similar body structure to that of the ancient percursor temples and monuments, but i never saw how the original precursors fit into the picture. I know we have discussed the role of Ottsels as "imposter" Precursors and how the smaller glowing being that emerges from the Precursor Egg in Jak II is more than likly a REAL Precursor, but i was curious as to your thoughts as to why they looked that way or at least modled thier warmachines and statues after the long nosed mosquito men.

I imagine the long noses on the robots may have been used to syphon eco out of eco aquifers underground or in rocks. I don't think either of the robots that jak faced in the games were intended to be warmachines, but rather served civilian purposes originally. If my memory served me correctly, the eco mines in Jak 3 were litter with rusted, long-nosed robots and were probably used by mar to collect eco for Haven. As to why the oracles and statues all have the same nose, i'm not as sure. My guess would be that eco and its collection was so central to Precursor culture that it was heavily incorperated into their art and religion.

Interesting and valid. I do remember that the War Machine outfitted in Jak and Daxter by Gol and Mia was not orignally a war machine and your syphoning of eco via robots theory is very convincing. Another question i have has to do with Mar's Cannon from Jak 2. When do you think he built it? I can't remember exactally when they said he did? Was it at the end of his life knowing that he would come along in his youth to actually use it? Or did he build it during and use it and then just transport it to a stratigic location for future use? What intrigues me is all these unanswered questions about the Jak Universe.
Oh and i do have one more question about your version of the Jak mythos. Jak and Torn are enemies? Brilliant idea, but i am curious as to the Rift and how he got to the past and if he is there then what about Ashlin, Sig, Samos, Keira, and lots of the other characters? Keep up the awesome work man and i will see your around.

Mar built the Gun late in his life, as indicated by a quote from Krew "the poor fool died before he could use it." The Gun was built for one purpose - penetrating the metalhead nest. It's plausible that Mar had a second, possibly mobile, verson of the Gun, with the Baron's advice in mind (the first rule to building a weapon is to always build two...). Building the Gun probably came with a lot of internal conflict for Mar though, since he knew that he'd die once construction was complete.

In my version of the 'Jak Mythos,' Mar and Daxter returned to the past with Torn (who felt he lacked a place in a world with no war to fight), Ashlin (who wanted nothing to do with Haven politics after the events of Jak 3 and Mar was of course willing to let her come with him), and the aging Samos (who had nothing better to do) via a rift gate provided by the ottsels (who also accompanied him). Ashlin was accidently separated from the party on the way through the rift tunnel and ended up in the past several years before the rest of the party arrived. Torn served as Mar's military advisor (and mentor after Samos passed away). Tension grew between the two later in Mar's life as the Gun was under construction. Mar sensed that Samos had instructed Torn on what was going to happen; he knew that Torn knew how and when he was going to die. As one can imagine, this led to a good deal of mistrust. In the end, when Mar went over the edge after years of the stress from defending Haven and the heartache of losing everyone dear to him, He and Torn had a simultaneous epiphany: the legendary Mar was not going to die the heroic death the history books would portray, or die the accidental death Samos had foreseen; he would die as a poor angry fool at the hands of the one man wise enough and skilled enough to be able to kill the Precursors' Tragic Hero of Haven.

wow, thats great. always knew this was a tragedy. and man i cant wait for more stuff from ya. these discussions rock i feel like all aspects of the jak universe can be solved with just a few peoples opinions and thoughts.

i gotta ask where did mar find this beast of a weapon? i thought this war was after j&d but before jak 2 so maybe jak just new where to look by some information in the future of a location of a precursor palace or military facility or armory of some sort. or is it more of jaks new knowledge of how to build and repair the precursor technology with more precursor materials rather then the new technology that gol and maiaused on their repairs to the precursor robot. and again on the note of gol and maia, we know they are masters of dark eco but they also wore precursor armor. i cant help but notice that gol wore a gauntlet with tubes running into his arms that were very similar to mars but gol appeared to have no eco running through them. of course dark eco doesnt glow quite like the others so possibly it was full of dark eco but was too dull too see. i guess the question i have on that subject is do you think ther is any link between there gauntlets?

spohniscool In reply to jonnypistols [2008-01-13 21:46:38 +0000 UTC]

The ottsels told Mar where to look, or rather, where to dig. The Destroyer was entombed in a hillside outside of Haven, waiting for Mar to reactivate it. As for the gauntlets, Gol's gauntlet was my inspiration for Mar's eco gauntlet - i wanted Mar to somewhat resemble his previous enemies visually, so that every time he saw himself he would be reminded of the vices that led to their downfalls: erol's recklessness and obession with vengeance, gol's dependency on eco and desire to "reshape the world", and Praxis's mindset of 'the end justifies the means.'

"The Gun" is the large cannon positioned just outside the metelhead nest in Jak 2. It was powered by the last precursor egg and was used by Jak and Daxter to prenatrate the nest and initiate the final confrontation with Kor, The Metelhead Leader. It was a giant cannon, red too if i remember it. Try looking up some of the Jak 2 story videos on Youtube for some refreshers. But speaking of Kor, what is his role in your Jak Mythos Spohn?

spohniscool In reply to Hammerthane [2008-01-14 04:02:37 +0000 UTC]

Kor spends most of his time in the nest, plotting and planning how to get his hands on the last precursor egg. Kor approaches Mar several times in his human disguise - usually to offer Mar duplicitous deals or to taunt Mar over deaths of his loved ones - always trying to find vulnerabilityin Haven's leader. Mar knows that any attempt to kill Kor on his part would be in vain, so instead he focuses his energy on resisting Kor's temptation. I guess one could look at Kor's role during Mar's reign as being similar to satan's role during Christ's later years (if you're familiar with the New Testement).

that makes sense but why doesnt kor try to kill mar, doing so would prevent many obstacles in the future i think. also i might just be thinking too hard but if mar is the founder of the city, then his offspring would be the next leader and so on until it came to damas and praxis, his like great great great grand kids, and his father. would that not say jak is his own great grandfather^4? i assume you simply said jak had no children or that they or he was overthrone and a new leader was chosen.

Kor was aware of how powerful Mar was and though Kor knew Mar would not be able to kill him, he did not want to risk the embarassment of not being able to kill Mar. Additionally (and most importantly), Kor needed the last precursor egg that was in Mar's possession; if Mar died, the locaton of the egg would be lost. Kor sa his best opportunity for getting the egg was to pursuade Mar to give ito him. As for Mar's lineage, his genetic line had to have been broken somewhere along the way; either an adopted child or a non-blood relative took the throne and kept the Mar name. So although Damas, and possibly Praxis, were of the House of Mar, they were not direc decendants.

Now that is nice. It brings a feeling similiar to a calm before the storm. I can just imagine this war machine marching through the countryside before it rains doom on it's enemies.
