Description
I'm sure it's been done before but I had to draw it when i got the ideaAnyway, just in case you don't know Godzilla's name Gojira is actually the fusion of Gorilla and Whale, yet he himself looks like a dinosaur!
I like how Cartoon-y He looks in this!
Godzilla/Gojira (C) TOHO

Just goes to show that everybody loves Dinosaurs.
So much that Toho based Godzilla on a T-Rex, rather than a "WhaleApe."
(is it any wonder that a recently discovered dinosaur was named the "Gojirasaurus??")

Well I'm not surprised, he did end up looking like a Reptillian gorilla-thing in the end anyway.

Well I'd known of a contest to do a"Literal Gojira" a while back, but this was done on a whim.

Who named him, actually?
In the movies, was it the press or the scientists, or what?
I've seen the movie, but it's been a while.

in the 50's movie it was the locals of Odo Island that named him, in the American version it was a Japanese sailor they picked up and I have no clue for any of the other films.
Although the actual name itself doesn't have a clear origin as the best I can find out/know is that "Gojira" was a nickname of someone who worked at the studio and was then given to the monster.

Does he consider it to be his name?
I mean, would he introduce himself as Gojira/Godzilla?
Then again, he might have a distinct lack of social skills.

I have no idea, although Minya calls him Godzilla in "Destroy all monsters" although then again that film was, odd to say the least.
I doubt it, while he's never talked or seen doing much in the way of socializing too much in one of the films the twin fairy's hint at being pretty rude and/or foul-mouthed, although If i remember correctly they do call him Godzilla in that, he can presumably 'understand' them, and he responds.
Although he could be like a lot of pet animals and has heard "The squishies" call him Godzilla so many times he might just 'recognize' it as their name for him. He does answer to some kids calling his "name" out in 'Terror of Mechagodzilla' after all so he at least recognizes it.
I think his social skills depend on the films era, the first two films have him as a destructive beast, the "showa" series has him as a child-friendly superhero and he's possibly near-humanoid in intelligence and regularly teams-up with others even having a fairly infamous 'victory dance', then the "Heisei" and "Millenium" series have him much more animalistic and brutal and he seems only to socialize with his own kind.

And then there was that time when he played basketball against Barkley.
[link]
Godzilla has gotten into all kinds of weird stuff...
And his characterisation changes dramatically between.

I'd seen a picture of Godzilla playing Basketball but never against Barkley, although I think there was a advert with him playing against a sports personality.
True, it's best to just go with the flow really, characters'll change and end up doing a lot of weird stuff

"although I think there was a advert with him playing against a sports personality."
That was Barkley.
Personally, I consider the first Godzilla-movie to be a really good one.
The others after that can be enjoyable in different ways, but I kinda think of them as happening in a different universe.

Ahh right, okay.
It is the best one of the lot I think.
Yeah each "chunk" of them are supposed to be in the same Universe but there are contradictions in them.

had a friendly contest awhile ago where people drew "literal" Gojiras. They're located in [link] if you're interested to see them.
As for the pic, I enjoy the style. Godzilla came out very well, and the "Gojira" looks good too.

Yeah I'd heard of that contest a while ago, but it was over when I saw the entries.
Thanks!
The 'gojira' was oddly difficult but I've never found Whales to be all that easy.
