Description
Numb is a lithe blue-gray cat with a large festering scar and furless patch of skin over half of her face. One eye is a plain green while the other eye - the one crossed by the scar - is almost hollow in its shadowy appearance, the pupil marked with blood red. Her tail has been chewed into a twisted mangle. One last noteworthy scar is the grotesque gash across her belly that doesn't seem to have properly healed, the skin around it peeled open and inflamed.

Cursed with total numbness to her sense of touch. She feels no sensation against her fur, nothing for any cut into her skin, she wouldn't even flinch if you gouged out her eyes. Numb knows well to avoid damage to her body of course, but she can't ever feel it. The most she can feel is a slight sense of weight.
You'd think this curse would be a good thing in a world literally called PAIN. Numb can admit that she's been "gifted" one of the kinder ones. But still, a dulled sense for physical pain does nothing to numb her emotional pain.

And oh, she's hurting.

Numb hates her curse. She hates PAIN. She hates why it exists and what it does to innocent cats. But she doesn't want out. She wants something else. Something final.

Numb was one of the earliest arrivals in PAIN, shortly after Hate was instated as the final pillar. And she knows quite a bit more about THEM than most cats in PAIN do as well as retaining very lucid memories of her life before PAIN. There are multiple cats in PAIN that she even knew in life. Particularly someone she was very close to, and someone else she had grown to despise...

It's no small feat to have survived for as long as Numb has in PAIN, especially when she's gone through each Pillar's territory multiple times. But Numb is smart, crafty and always has a trick up her sleeve. She's also surprisingly tolerated by Pillars like Love and Kill (when he was still around,) thanks to Numb being one of the first residents of PAIN and always keeping polite and pragmatic when talking with them. Numb built a reputation as a strange, tolerable presence roaming around PAIN.

But something has been festering under that carefully maintained surface, since the very moment she appeared in PAIN. And it's only been growing.

At some point, after Kill's death, Numb explored the heart and found a loyal ally in a nervous, lonely cat named Gnaw. She lead him out of the heart and, being able to placate his insatiable urge to bite and gnash with her tail, he's followed behind her closely wherever she went.

While Gnaw sees her as his first and only friend in PAIN - the only cat who's been willing to help him or ever even wanted him around. Numb sees a useful tool in Gnaw. Another trick up her sleeve to finally bring her goal to fruition.

Numb eventually found Drip's group and agreed to helping her cause, though Drip had suspicions about Numb's motives, Numb told Drip she wanted to be out of PAIN more than anyone. And having some prior knowledge on the occult, it was actually Numb who informed Drip and Free that the Pillars needed to die for PAIN's reality to be weakened enough for an escape to made in it.

Numb has spent most of her time with Drip's group since then, though she often disappears (with Gnaw trailing right behind her) into other territories for stretches of time. These unexplained disappearances have only made Drip more wary of her.

Numb has been overdue for a lore revamp as I've had a new and improved direction for her character figured out for a while.

Numb has long played a kind of anti-hero/antagonist in PAIN's story, but it took me a while to figure out how exactly she fit in and what her motivations were. She's definitely become one of my favorite characters in PAIN and I'm excited to share more of her storyline here. And also, unlike with other revamps where old reference lore still (at least mostly) applies, I consider Numb's old description to no longer be canon (though some parts of it still are.) I am still leaving that description intact in case you want to read it, but just know this image marks the beginning of definitive Numb lore from here on out.

There's more to Numb. Particularly with cats she knew since before PAIN, but I'm hoping to expand more on those relationships in future references. With what I've already revealed in other descriptions, you might actually already be able to guess who her closest friend and mate was.
