Ayy I've got some more ideas with the IceWings-take-over-also-with-NightWings (name pending) AU!

So in Pantala, there are actually two sub-species of HiveWings - Raw HiveWings and Combed HiveWings. (at least that's what they're technically called, there's probably some slander-y nicknames for them as well.

Combed HiveWings are much like the ones we know in the books. No antennae, slender features, thin wings, big forehead spike, and a multitude of special powers. (they might have some differences in this au, but pretty much the same)
Raw HiveWings were actually more common/widespread than Combed HiveWings, and are considered to be closer to what HiveWings originally were when they diverged from their common ancestor with SilkWings.

Raw HiveWings are bulkier/chubbier, with less sharp of features, two antennae, small forehead spike, and wider wings. Raw HiveWings have mostly similar colors with Combed HiveWings, but usually more mottled patterns (proper stripes are pretty rare) and odd bits of blues, greens, purples, etc. Most likely from interbreeding with SilkWings.
Female Raw HiveWings have a tail stinger, while males usually don't. There's nothing deadly in the stinger, but it does hurt a LOT.

SilkWings were always the more dominant tribe on Pantala compared to HiveWings. But Combed HiveWings were especially rare, because they're a product of certain HiveWings isolating themselves in well hidden areas to preserve a "purity" they believed they had. So Combed HiveWings are from a lot of inbreeding. (within-tribe mind control might be a product of that?)

Raw HiveWings were the rest of HiveWings who just stuck around and tried not to get into too much trouble with the other tribes. They were quite solitary themselves, but were absolutely hated by Combed HiveWings. Due to being widely spread out, interbreeding with SilkWings or even LeafWings wasn't uncommon.

When the Pyrrhian tribes came, SilkWings fought back. Many LeafWings chose to stay against their own Queens wishes, who instead chose to go to Pyrrhia.
Combed HiveWings took surprising interest with IceWings and left the dirty Raw HiveWings and inferior SilkWings to join them. Due to Combed HiveWings already having experience in hiding and also their deadly abilities, they make terrifying enemies for the rest of Pantala.
Raw HiveWings were forced to ally with SilkWings due to Combed HiveWings hatred of them. Though Raw HiveWings have less fighting experience than even SilkWings. They're at least... willing to help...?

The Raw HiveWing's current Queen is Queen Mite. Doesn't have any actual royal blood, she was just kinda chosen...

One thing Raw HiveWings are good at is building.
They might build a near impenetrable and hidden fortress or something. That might look cool.

Also, the entire continent Pantala mysteriously seems to cancel out or stop any animus magic on it...
Making IceWings especially frustrated with it and determined to find out what the heck the SilkWings did.
