When I refer to it I usually just simplify. I'm fairly certain it was first played in China but yeah I know it's played in several other Asian countries now. 
For the longest time I didn't even know Go was a totally different game than Shogi!! (Until I tryed playing them both... that made the difference fairly clear.)
