She wanted for nothing.
Kagome wandered the halls of the estate in the kimono that she knew was his favorite, with her hair pulled messily into a bun, and her feet bare. He didn't like it when she didn't wear socks or slippers; he worried that she would catch a cold. Human beings were such fragile creatures. She blamed his worry on the recently ill Rin, who had taken to her bed with a stuffy nose and a cough.
But he was a very busy lord, and she doubted he would stumble on her as she wandered through her favorite parts of his house. Outside, a gentle rain was falling, the sun shining brightly behind the clouds, hinting that it might come out later. It was days like today which made her miss her time, made her want to take Ah-Un and fly to the well; so she could slip back into the future and bask in the cool rains of February with her annoying little brother, and her worried mother. She even missed her grandpa, with his ineffectual sutras and his ick-inspiring gifts of mummified hands.
Rin was a wonderful child, a constant and cheerful companion, but Kagome longed for her old friends and family.
She came to a stop staring out of a round window into the garden. Winter's chill hadn't crept completely out of the earth, but she could see the faint promise of spring in the flower buds that were beginning to pepper the branches of the cherry trees. Soon the gardens would be painted pink and white with the delicate blossoms, and Kagome wouldn't be able to resist spending her days out amongst them. Sighing softly, Kagome moved away from the window and continued down the hall, working her way towards the room of mirrors.
Sesshoumaru told her that the mirrors were magicked to show the viewer what their true desires were, but Kagome hadn't ever gotten them to work. She thought, maybe, that they only worked for demons. As a priestess she couldn't command the demonic magics of the mirrors. She could purify them, if they ever gave off a hint of evil energy. But they never did. Benign, was what they were. Benign, demonic magic.
When she approached the door there was a moment of resistence from a ward. The magic may not have been evil, but the mirrors were addictive when you could use them. Many lesser demons had wasted away before them, unable to tear their eyes from their heart's desires. Her fingers brushed the shoji screen of the door, and the ward crumpled beneath the delicate touch, dissolving into nothingness and allowing her to slide it open and step inside.
She slid the door closed behind her gently and stepped towards the center of the room, staring at herself as she did. The mirrors surrounded the room, ancient things that were held up on ancient stands, the wood of them carved into patterns of energy. She should have been able to see her family, her friends, but she alone stared back out of the polished mirrors. She was dressed like a princess, her kimono large and billowing and embroidered with the delicate cresent moons that represented everything she loved about the Western territority. Her hair had grown ridiculously long, and she released it from its messy bun to fall in soft waves down to the backs of her knees. Her bare toes peaked out under the kimono's hem, pale and delicate.
She tilted her head, and her reflection squinted out at her as though she was a familiar stranger. Someone she almost recognized, but who she couldn't quite place the features of. She was Kagome Higurashi, but it was obvious she wasn't the same girl who'd been dragged into the well on her fifteenth birthday. It was so obvious that it made something sharp ache in her chest. If she visited her time, would her mother even recognize her?
Her eyes clouded with tears; tears which built up until they made slow tracks down her cheeks.
Inuyasha wouldn't recognize her, though the older she got the more she resembled Kikyo. Sango and Miroku wouldn't know her from any other lady who stalked the lonely halls of her lord's castle. She wondered, for a horrified moment, if Shippo would recognize her the next time he visited. Her hair had been shorter when he last found his way into the western lands, and her face had been rounder.
She didn't hear anything, but in the mirror another figure appeared. Tall and stately, with silver hair that swayed behind him like a cape made of starlight. His features were sharp and his cheeks and forehead marked with the stripes and cresent moon of his birthright. Kagome's breath caught, and she fought the urge to turn around, afraid that there wouldn't be anyone there; afraid that the mirrors were finally showing her what she wanted to see.
"You are lonesome," the demon lord said, and his voice was a whisper against her ear as he stepped up behind her.
Her eyes fluttered closed in relief, and she leaned back against him, "Just a little bit."
He made a soft noise in his throat of understanding, and his arms encircled her waist in a loose embrace, his lips pressing to the soft skin behind her ear.
"I thought you were negotiating a treaty today," she said softly, and one of the arms disappeared from around her.
"I am," he stated, and the arm reached over her shoulder to hold a small box before her, "But this day... it is important to you, is it not?"
She gave a surprised gasp, reaching up to gently take the package from him, "Sesshoumaru..."
She slowly lifted the lid, her eyes widening at the delicate, silver chain that laid within, adorned with a cherry blossom that was colorfully enameled. He spoke softly, "I want only for your happiness."
"I am happy," she said, turning in his arms to press a kiss to his lips, her arms wrapping around his neck to pull him closer.
He pulled back, and his eyes were warm with emotion, "Happy Valentine's day, Kagome."
And the loneliness was still there, but he made it easier to bear.
"Happy Valentine's, Sesshoumaru," she said, her lips pulling into a grin.
