Chapter Seven: A plan in motion
The plan had been perfect. Or, rather, as close to perfect as a plan could possibly be. The counsel had it put into action only a few minutes after (Y/N) discussed it with them. The idea was to tell all the workers that an armed criminal had escaped police custody, and was believed to have found a place to hide in the carnival. Once word of that got out, all of the workers would refuse to set foot on the carnival grounds until they were told said criminal had been captured. Then the police would be free to conduct their search without fear of anyone discovering the real reason behind them being there. That would ensure any bodies could be found and properly buried without anyone discovering the dark past of the carnival. Nubbs had dialed up the chief of police to arrange a meeting with him as soon as it was agreed that the plan was ideal. Surprising as it was, Meyla and (Y/N) were even kept around to participate in the meeting.
Luck was in their favor. As it was, a convict had escaped custody a few days prior and had only just been captured. As far as the media was concerned though, he had yet to be taken back into custody. All the police needed to do was postpone the revelation of the criminals capture, and ask the media to inform people to avoid any empty buildings and deserted areas. This would include the carnival, seeing as it was a large area full of empty buildings. The fact that it was desolate at night, made the story more believable. The plan was quickly put into motion, and within twenty-four hours those working on carnival grounds were calling in to inform their employer that they were to afraid to go in for work. The idea of bumping into an armed and dangerous convict was more than enough to keep most from wanting to show. The information that he was convicted of attempted murder, played its part in making sure no one wanted to go to the carnival.
With everyone too nervous to even consider arguing if they were told to stay home, the chief of police called Meyla and (Y/N)’s boss to have them tell their workers to avoid the carnival for a while. He told said employer that the police were going to search the area for the escaped convict, and that they didn’t want to risk anyone accidentally getting hurt. Needless to say, people were more than willing to keep their distance. The police were free to go into the carnival to search for the bodies, and they didn’t have to worry about any prying eyes spying on them. So long as the media was kept distracted, there would be no problem. As it was, even that issue was sorted out. The police arranged for false searches to be done in various locations. They were going to purposely make a fuss over a number of them to draw the media’s attention away from the carnival. All in all, the plan really was as close to perfect as it could possibly get.
To top it all off, the date of the carnival’s reopening was due to be changed. The employer decided they’d set a new date once all the workers were able to resume their painting. So (Y/N) didn’t have to worry about all the time she and the others would have lost from the ordeal. Everything seemed to be falling into place. The website once holding the dark truth of the carnival now held an unpleasant lie. The bodies that were likely hidden in the carnival were on the brink of being found and put to rest. The police were free to work without risk of the media or snoopy people discovering what they were actually looking for- and none of the workers were losing time as result of the search. From given perspective, everything looked as if it were going to run along smoothly. As far as (Y/N) and the others were concerned, there was no chance of things falling to hell. Not with all of the precautions that had been taken.
All matters aside, (Y/N), Meyla, and Nickolas had all decided to celebrate their little victory. Or rather, Nickolas decided to take the pair of artists out for lunch to apologize for any distress he might have caused them. Awkward as she felt over it, (Y/N) accepted his offer. Meyla did likewise, though it was painfully apparent that she was uncomfortable with the situation. The pair of artists were alike in that regard. When it came down to it, they were an antisocial pair of women. Hey, they were artists after all. Some of the most respected people of their craft downright hated being around people. Sad but earnest truth, but still, the pair agreed to go out to lunch with Nickolas. He insisted on treating them, and of course he wanted to go to one of the more expensive eateries. He opted for an Italian restaurant, but was polite enough to confirm with the pair that they actually liked Italian food.
Best to make sure everyone will eat, before you go about making any reservations. When he confirmed that the pair were alright with the food choice, he reserved a table for three. The time was set for eleven in the morning, and they arrived about fifteen minutes early for sake of making sure they weren’t late. Being late meant their table could be given away, and then Nickolas would be paying for someone else’s meal. They didn’t have to wait that long prior to being seated, and then it was just a matter of everyone figuring out what they wanted to order. The salad bar was free so long as you had a table reserved, so the group was able to try whatever they wanted in that regard. When it came to anything on the menu, that was another story. Neither of the women were very keen when it came to going out to eat. Given that they were antisocial they didn’t really enjoy going to places where it was more or less expected of you to be friendly.
So, neither of them really knew what they would like. Aside from pasta and lasagna, the two weren’t all that familiar with Italian food. Thanks to this, they opted to order the same meal just to test and see if they would like it. Granted, they would each get their own, seeing as they hadn’t ordered to share. If not, then the salad bar would do well enough. There were three different soups and a variety of salads and small treats to pick between, so they wouldn’t go hungry. After their meals had been ordered, everyone took to the salad bar to see what there was to snack on until their food arrived. The salads were interesting. Most of them came topped with shredded cheese, but some types of salad were “Dairy free” for sake of suiting the needs of lactose intolerant customers. (Y/N) opted to get some salad with croutons, and a small bowl of soup. She wanted to see if she liked her chosen foods before really digging in to them.
So she only had small portions of each. Less on her plate- less to waste if she couldn’t bring herself to eat it. By stroke of luck her judgment was spot on with the food. The salad was good, and as strange as the soup looked to her, it tasted great. She would have been fine eating that alone if she hadn’t ordered an actual entrée. The food from the salad bar was enough to tide her over until the main course arrived, and as expected the food on her plate looked nothing like what had been in the picture. The sauce looked more like soup, and the noodles weren’t a very pleasing color. To be blunt, it looked as if someone had just put the pasta in tomato soup and added chunks of meat to pass it off as a good dish. When she took the time to inspect, she found Meyla’s meal to be in the exact same state. That of course meant that the dish in general was served looking far less appetizing than what people thought they were ordering. Still, (Y/N) was willing to give it a taste.
If it was anything like the soup, then looks were deceiving. This was not the case. The food tasted worse than it looked, and that said something. There was no chance of her even attempting to eat more of it, and odds were she wouldn’t come back to the restaurant in the future. Meyla didn’t seem to like her food either, which wasn’t much of a surprise. What they had ordered had not been what they received. Within minutes of getting their entrée’s, it was obvious to Nickolas that the pair were going to eat from the salad bar. They refused to eat more than they had, then returned to the salad bar to get more of what they seemed to like. With that, (Y/N) had a lunch of soup and salad, and Meyla dined on that plus fruit and breadsticks. Before long, the waitress noticed the pair weren’t touching their food. She asked if anything was wrong, and after being told they didn’t like it she offered to bring them something else free of charge.
They turned her down, each stating that they didn’t want to cause any trouble. The waitress eventually left after a few minutes of pressing for them to try something else on the menu, and then the accepted that their minds could not be changed. So, she collected their unwanted meals and took them back to the kitchen. That left the trio to finish their lunch without interruption, or, so it seemed. Only a few minutes after the waitress left, Nickolas’s phone began to chime. He quickly excused himself so that he could go and answer it, which left the women to eat “In private”. Or, as private as they could be, while in a restaurant. While he was away, the women decided to sneak a peek at whatever sweets there might be on the dessert menu. There were a few types of gelato, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate cake. Not much aside from that. They were honestly a little disappointed by the discovery.
For such an expensive place, there wasn’t a lot to choose from. Poorly made entrée’s plus a lack of interesting desserts, and yet the place was expensive and fairly popular. There must have been something really good on the menu for people to be willing to spend so much money there. Otherwise, everyone was crazy. Or, at least that was (Y/N) opinion. As far as she was concerned, the only plus about the restaurant was the service. Waiters and waitresses were quick and efficient, and the food didn’t take long to arrive. (Y/N) decided she was willing to give the dessert a try. She opted for the (Check underlined), seeing as it was something she typically enjoyed eating. Meyla went with the chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. She wanted to order both to have them both at once. Kind of like a makeshift ice cream cake type thing. The woman hoped it would taste good, though she would likely eat it even if it wasn’t.
In the end, it was easier to down a disappointing dessert than it was to eat a bad tasting meal. Not long after the pair confirmed what they would be ordering for dessert, Nickolas came back. He sported a gigantic smile upon his face, and when he sat down he seemed to fidget as if excited about something. Despite being curious, neither of the women saw any point in confronting him on his sudden shift in mood. If he had anything important to say to them, he’d say it. The group finished off their lunch, and ordered dessert when the waitress returned to ask if they’d like anything else before they left. Meyla ordered her ice cream and cake, Nickolas ordered strawberry gelato, and (Y/N) ordered what she had decided on. Their dessert arrived less than five minutes after they ordered it, and it couldn’t have taken more than ten minutes for them to have eaten it. Once everyone was done eating, Nickolas paid the bill, and then the group left the restaurant.
For whatever reason, he still wore that enormous smile upon his face. The women still opted not to question him on it. If whatever was making him grin like that applied to them in any way, he would tell them. With lunch over and done with, the trio piled into Nickolas’s car so that he could drive them home. Once they were on the road, the male seemed keen on filling them in on what his phone call had been about. They couldn’t believe what he told them…
