Description
"All I wanted to do was to make something beautiful." -Jiro Horikoshi
Great inventors never seem to foresee the negative consequences of their actions; they only ever hope to make something beneficial to humanity. Alfred Noble, for example, invented dynamite for construction and development, not as a weapon. The plot of 'The Wind Rises' seems to allude to a similar sentiment.
My illustration for the contest contrasts the bright blue skies the protagonist saw his planes in with the fiery destruction the same aerial crafts caused during WWII. The falling feathers represent his dream of creating beautiful planes and how the wonderful creations turned dark as they wreaked havoc and spread death across the land.
I haven't actually seen the movie yet, but I've read the plot and it seems really interesting, though heartbreaking. I'm looking forward to catching it when it finally comes to my area. It seems unusual that the great director Hayao Miyazaki plans to go out with a movie that is not fantasy as with most of his other works.
Anyway, I know this entry doesn't stand a chance of winning, but I still decided to make it as a tribute to Hayao Miyazaki, for whom I have great respect. His works are outstanding, and he has been a tremendous inspiration to myself and many others.
This is a mixed media work made with watercolors, acrylics, colored pencils, and ink. I also touched some little details digitally.
