Pathfinders are a strange species; their bodies are more or less solid, seemingly made up of smoke, mist or fog. Their bodies never show any markings - any markings will only be found on their "blankets", which serve both as protection for the pathfinder and as a flying device; the blankets are hardly ever without motion, even if the pathfinder is at rest and there is no wind. Each pathfinder has lantern, which is detachable from their varied horns. It is not advisable to separate a pathfinder from their lantern, however, as this will cause them to become malevolent spirits with the single mind of driving the lost insane. There are three types of horns that a pathfinder may exhibit - metallic, botanical, or bone - and studies have suggested that the type of horn may dictate the attitude of the pathfinder.
A pathfinder's purpose is to use their lanterns to guide travelers on their paths through life. They often attach themselves to one person until that person is no longer "lost", and then move on to another person to guide. They are docile creatures and completely mute. Their eyes only open if they are separated from their lantern, and it is said that the eyes of a pathfinder will haunt you for the rest of your life.
