As I stare at my engagement ring throughout the day, I do often wonder how they came up for the names of the different cuts; though I only know two (Princess and Brilliant), I think about how the names of these cuts came to be.

My father works with a diamond resaler so I actually know quite alot about diamonds and their cuts this site [link] gives at least most of the names. Althouh it doesn't seem to say anything about "mine cut" diamonds which as the name suggests are diamonds that were cut roughly in the mines. It's almost never done anymore because people like the brilliance of a sharp cut and there's quite a lot of technology involved now but my mother has a beautiful ring with these mine cut diamonds and theres something so much more raw and real about it than a Fancy cut. The names are normally a descriptive nature Emerald is called so because the square top is reminiscent of how an emerald is traditionally cut, brilliant is a cut designed to make the ring shine "brilliantly" a princess cut is actually a type of Brilliant cut its just the top that differs. round, pear, oval radiant heart marquis are all brilliant but they are shapes of the diamonds top. I'm going to stop now, this is getting rediculous. sorry.
