Description
The Executioner was a working title for this particular character. He will not have any 'codename.'Basically, this was just a quicky to be able to give an artist an idea of what the character should look like.
This particular pic is rather obviously modelled on Bruce Willis. If you noticed that, but weren't sure, now you don't have to go insane!
This character will hopefully be introduced sooner than later in a new series.

No sarcasm intended here, dude. I like Bruce Willis. I like the way you flipped the script, portraying him as a cartoon character as opposed to him portraying a cartoony character, which he usually does, to me. Good work.

Ah, cool! I didn't understand what you were getting at.
Thanks!
His acting job in Unbreakable was the real inspiration for it. That stillness about his performance as David Dunn is very much what I have in mind for my 'realistic' Punisher.

That's cool, man. I like that movie myself. I like most of Big B's movies. He tends to turn everything he does into a caricature of himself. I think that makes him an interesting actor. What you're doing with it sounds like a good idea. Keep at it. Yippee-Cay-Yay!

Thanks!
Yeah, I love Bruce Willis, but some of his action roles are less than challenging.
Unbreakable is definitely a really interesting slant on it. I don't think I've ever really thought about it, but I see what you mean. Every role does seem to have Bruce Willis in them, and it's not necessarily a bad thing.
In the case of Unbreakable, I think the humanity he brought to it was really impressive. Bruce Willis is a guy we can all buy as being the hero, but for the day-to-day scenes, he really stepped it up!
I can't wait to see him in Sin City!
Thanks, if the series gets going, Ramirez won't be a big part of it for a long time, but I could see the pay-off to his role really making him a favourite character of a lot of people. He's got a small role, but it's a big story within the series.

Yeah, Bruce is great, especially in Unbreakable!
I'm sure he kicks arse in Sin City too. Might have to rent the bare bones DVD when it hits R4.

The DVD hasn't. I think it's a month away, still.
We got it in theatres about four or five months after you got it.
It came out in July with Fantastic Four, which we got a day before you guys because of time differences.
I think it's because it was such a low budget release.

I wanted a really dejected look about him, like a guy who's lost everything, so I used a scene from Unbreakable as reference. The scene where he's just gotten out of the hospital, and his son is hugging him.
If I ever got a movie made, Willis all the way.
Can't wait to see Sin City.
Missed it at the cinema, and I'm waiting for the SE DVD, so... still a few months away.

It was pretty close though... there was a little hyperbole on my part I admit, but it was damn close. I got Hellboy from the UK on DVD, and it arrived here the same day it the movies here. I was so scared they were going to do that to Batman... nightmares and everything... I still wake up at night screaming, and it's over.

Yeah, the Hellboy wait was atrocious!
I guess that's the problem with the smaller movies. Don't think that would ever happen with a Batman.
Blockbusters are all about global releases, these days.
We're better off than some. The UK is only just getting Lost on television!

It's not just comic book movies, it's any small budget movie.
Fantastic Four was a multi-million dollar movie, so we got it on the global relase.
Sin City was much smaller, and got here at snail's pace.
It's usually budget that's relative to delays.
Funnily enough, we got X2 on DVD a month and a half before the US!

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-14 08:28:34 +0000 UTC]
He's not unlike The Punisher, in the sense that his family was killed by gangsters, and he wants revenge.
The path he'll take, the manner in which he takes it, and his character are dramatically different though.
My artist friend called him a 'realistic Punisher.'
The series I'm trying to get up and running now will see him introduced in issue #2 in a minor role.

Sounds cool. When you say "realistic", what could you compare him with? 100 Bullets? Stray Bullets? Sin City? Something else?

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-14 09:54:30 +0000 UTC]
That's a tough one. It's definitely in the same realm as those things, but I shamefully haven't read any of them - not even Sin City - so I can't really say.
I'd probably say it's even more realistic than any of those.
In respect to this particular character, he's... there's not a lot of exaggeration about him at all.
He's not on a grand mission. He just wants the people responsible for his family's death to pay, rather than crime in general.
He doesn't really have a master plan like the Punisher, or the Batman. There aren't any oxygen tanks strapped to the bottom of any piers, or anything. He doesn't even have any guns of his own.
He's a truly destroyed man, who's being kept alive by routine, and the unlikely chance of revenge.
The book in general is probably... 100 Bullets meets Bendis' Daredevil meets, maybe Sin City without the exaggerated powers of characters like Marv.
It's a very grounded book, that as far as I know, will be pretty unique.

But I don't want to waste your time. You should go and read 100 Bullets right. now!

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-14 11:05:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I think it's going to be exciting.
Without reading a lot of these other books first, it's hard to say, but I think it might be stepping up the realism of some of these situations, but without departing from those cartoony, comic booky ideals. It's... definitely adult, and there's a huge cast of characters... I don't know, it's difficult to explain it.
The first issue is definitely one of the scripts I've been most satisfied with. It came out really well.
It's just a matter of finding an artist who isn't too busy. I'm not having a lot of luck.
This series stars the Russian Man, who has a deceptively silly sounding name. There are no super heroes present, the names are just names.
I've had 100 Bullets recommended to me, and I definitely want to check out a trade!
Just gotta get some money.
The last series I finally checked out, which was for my birthday, was Gotham Central in trade. Which I really enjoyed!

With your talent and your determination, I'm sure it's going to be great. Where are you looking for comic book artists? In the convention circuit? Here on deviantART?

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-14 11:56:46 +0000 UTC]
The convention circuit doesn't really reach Australia, and I'm nowhere near reaching the States, so it's an online search.
I haven't really sought out anyone on DeviantArt yet.
Whenever appropriate projects come up, there are a few artists I'd definitely like to contact, but haven't spoken to anyone yet.
I've been sticking the American comic community, mostly.
That's the best place to find the people who want to break in, and with very little money to back stuff, it's gotta be people who are working for exposure.
I've been hoping to launch this paticular series with someone of some name value, but so far I'm not having a lot of luck. I've gone through three guys, and at least two have been interested, but too busy.
It's a tough one!
So far I've found the couple of artists I've heard from that answered an earlier notice in my DA journal, have already done some work, and really want cash more than recognition.

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to SpringyNinja [2005-09-14 13:02:16 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm... It sounds like a tough search. Basically, you have to find very talented young and upcoming artists without ever meeting them face to face, and you can't even promise to pay them real money for their work? In any other business, it would be impossible. In comics, I guess it's just really hard: there are so many starving artists in the industry that there's probably someone out there that would be interested in what you have to offer. Good luck anyway!

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-14 13:26:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, the best guys are running comics via the power of ecommerce now, so for this industry it's tough, but it's not going to shut anyone down.
The worst thing for anyone trying to start anything up is financial situation, and finding the right artists for the job who are willing to do it. There are plenty of writers, and you don't even have to be a good writer to get your foot in the door.
Artists are a lot scarcer, and really can pick and choose. Which makes the poor bitches, like me, pretty unattractive to some, no matter HOW appealing the project is.
I was just lucky to get hooked up with Cruz via a third party, and I found Wing for covers at a price I could just barely afford.
Yeah, fingers crossed.
It's easy for a guy to get real bitter, real quick.
