Description somewhat inspired by this:
www.deviantart.com/strigon85/a…

a guide to hammer-sickle variants and derivatives, all re-coloured uniformly and organized into various categories representing former and current states, former and current parties, and other ideological variants and curiosities.

hopefully this touches on most of the major variants you'd need to know about. certainly i'm forgetting some, but it would be nearly impossible to get every single one.

Thank you for assembling all these symbols in one place and posting the result. A very useful resource.

This is really nice, could you do a Fascist one? For educational purposes, rather than support for their ideologies.

Spungecore-Loonatik In reply to SuicidalSilence88 [2019-10-25 00:29:28 +0000 UTC]

i wouldn't be opposed to it, the only aesthetic issue being that their symbols tend to be very different from one another based on location rather than comparable like the hammer-sickle [reflective of their interest in the national rather than the international, i suppose], so the result wouldn't be near as uniform. i would also probably limit the colors to perhaps just black and white [much like how i homogenized the colors here] in order to encourage focus on the symbols rather than color.

there is also the question of how far must i go to be thorough..
should proto-fascist groups [like the Italian Nationalist Association and DNVP) be included?
what about groups within groups [like the SS]?
post-war oddities and modern neo-nazi groups?

i would say yes.

at least as far as symbolism is concerned, this is perhaps a broader topic than communism. i like the idea, but it would take a lot of research and effort, and probably the biggest unstated concern is how others in the socialist community will react.

Just do it like you did with this one, include the proto-fascist groups, etc.

you're welcome and thank you for the support. although a bit of a chore [mainly in having to fix the numbering each time i add something], it's been quite fun making and updating this.

in the near future i intend to do some similar guides in the same style, with themes ranging from anarchist symbolism to a guide covering rare or rejected socialist emblems [like this alternate soviet federal emblem  i recreated].

Interesting stuff. It's neat to see different takes on what is more or less the same basic symbol. (Although the Colombian ones kind of look like soft drink logos )

It would be interesting to see this concept with other political symbols, such as a phrygian cap, fasces, or the anarchist A-in-a-circle thing.

i've been somewhat interested in doing a similar piece that documents early 20th century socialist symbols (like this:  fineartamerica.com/featured/se… ) but have yet to get around to it. good idea with some of the other political symbols, tho

Not a fan of communism but I find these fascinating.

Also, what about other variants? Brazil or Japan?

i found a couple of brazilian variants to add soon, but nothing from japan.

i couldn't seem to find much in the way of Japan but i found a few pre-revolution Chinese red army variants i'll add soon. i also found a fairly obscure [and regional] 1920s era DemSoc party from the united states that used some hammer-sickle inspired designs on an election pin, so there's that:
oldpoliticals.com/ItemImages/0…

the tedious part of updating the list is that i have to re-number a significant portion of it every time i need to insert something that was left out.

12 & 18 look ... relaxed

13 has some 3D energy goin’ on

14 & 16 I like the unique sickle here, perhaps adapted for cotton?

21 Bauhaus

24 fun fact, in Hungarian "just put a complicated double plow in, nobody will notice" is probably one word

29 that little knob always worried me, how do you wield it?

35 & 76 a neat semiotic transition, an ear of wheat instead of a sickle and a gear instead of the hammer

37 & 38 an apt local adaptation

45 even more elegant than 33’s brush

61 as bold as it is graceful

71 the most recognizable IMHO

77 it even looks like it was painted

93 complex but gets the message across

i just added the hammer-machete design from the Popular Socialist Party of Cuba which was an early marxist-leninist organization there. as for the ruling communist party, they tend to not use the hammer and sickle.
