I just hope he gets into the series properly at some point. Even if it's just as a 'book villains come to life' thing.

Same here. 

I almost wonder if Chrysalis will find him during the finale or something. Like maybe he'll be pissed off that he's become a 'mere children's book bad guy" in the memories of Ponies and maybe they've forgotten that he actually exists or something like that.

He WAS a necromancer in his original appearance. If they made him into an undead lich that survived to the present day and then he found out his name was no longer feared, that might just be enough to motivate him into coming out of retirement.

Though I have to admit that's wishful thinking on my part.
