Description
This is the piece I've been working on pretty much exclusively for the last couple of weeks. I tried to put a lot of little hints at a story into this piece, and a lot of detail.Feel free to criticize in the comments below!
Update: Wow, thank you all for the wonderful support!
~flameydramon has written a lovely short story inspired by my picture (and it's just been updated with a 2nd chapter
~Woven-Word has also written a fanfic based off of this picture! [link]
Be sure to check them out. I think that they're both very interesting interpretations.

Dammit...why did I have to be smart enough to begin industrialization?

Amazing. I'm not sure why I instantly thought 'Gotham City'. I think the atmospher is reminisent of it. Has ponyville turned into a place that is no longer as safe an happy as it once was? Very good artwork, very good indeed.

I... love this. The atmosphere, the sense of story behind it, the lighting, the little details...
Not very constructive criticism, but there it is.

Old & ruined Wonderbolt flyer(That says Final Show), rainbow coloured Wonderbolt Goggles - Rainbow Dash's dream of becoming a wonderbolt is shattered?
A picture of the old Library in Ponyville, more "modern" house style, factories outside with smoke and so on - Ponyville is no more, it is an industrial city now, not a cozy little village?
The Element of Magic on the top left sheld along with a (very) few books - The day of the Elements of Harmony is over.
Sunset - The time of My Little Pony & Equestria as we know it, is over.
Did I get at least some of the hints you mentioned? :3

the factories in the background all make the atmosphere to this amazing. I thank you for your art and sharing it with us all.

It usually takes a lot for me to favorite my little pony fanart since there is a lot of it and I don't really watch the show...
But this is simply beautiful. Every time I look at it, I see more details I haven't notice before. The lighting is gorgeous yet terrifying at the same time. This is brilliant.

Wow! I love the atmosphere in this and the industry and the black smoke in the background is a nice touch, it adds a sense of anxiety and tension to complement what's being expressed by Twilight and Rainbow's faces and posture.
The coloring's excellent too, it looks like something straight out of a serious comic. I'm pretty blown away by this! Great job!

Holy fuck...kind of one of those dark pictures o_o.Reminds me so much of those post-rock/shoegaze bands that based themselves on urbanization A LOT.
I can see what the picture's attempting to convey:
Both Twilight and Rainbow was upset at the way Equestria has changed.Twilight's library tree is gone, now replaced with a factory-structured home with factories growing from behind.Rainbow upset her Idols have now split up.Her dream crushed and now what it was: A dream.
Great picture my friend,10/10.

Ooo, dystopian Equestria. The whole atmosphere is very intriguing and gritty without being too dark. If you really want some constructive criticism, the cutie marks are a bit on the large side and appear to be on the thigh/upper leg more than the flank, but well done nonetheless!

Hints of a story in it huh?
Hmmm.
Well I see Wonderbolts Goggles, Wonderbolts poster, a somewhat Fluttershy book in the library, Twilight's crown, and obviously the factory in the background.
Anything I miss? Either way, love it. Time and effort is clear in this piece.

Let's see, on the left I've found the Element of Magic and a book with Fluttershy's cutie mark on it, and on the right there is a picture of Twilight's treehouse library and a torn poster labeled "Wonderbolt's Last Show". On the railing are Rainbow Dash's goggles (Wonderbolt goggles, perhaps?). In the background is a factory and some Ponyville-style houses.
A story is starting to come together in my head. Maybe a treatise on the darker side of industrialization, maybe a deconstruction of the steampunk subgenre as a whole. Ponyville has changed in the past decades. The return of Luna put new focus on industry. Factories sprang up everywhere, and there was emigration to match. As the population of Ponyville swelled, so too did the town's construction. The old Library was condemned, as it posed a risk of collapse and property damage. It was soon replaced and most of the collection was relocated -- Fillydelphia, Canterlot, Baltimare. Still, Twilight never forgot the time she had spent in that old tree.
As time went on, for some reason or another, people stopped attending Wonderbolt shows. Deciding to cut their losses, the Wonderbolts put on one last finale. It is said the only people who attended were those close to the performers. Months passed, and an unemployed Dash is eventually forced to swallow her pride and turn to an old friend for help. Fluttershy, on the other hand, has been doing well for herself. The influx of veterinary patients due to the smog has provided the funding necessary to publish her definitive work on animal care.
The Element of Magic sits forgotten, crammed between books and collecting dust. It's all well; it's magic has long been lost.

I haven't watched/listened to that song in a few months, but when I saw your photo, I instantly thought of that shot from the AMV. It's official: pony fan-art always mirrors some movie/AMV/whatever.
