Description This is the piece I've been working on pretty much exclusively for the last couple of weeks. I tried to put a lot of little hints at a story into this piece, and a lot of detail.

Feel free to criticize in the comments below!

Update: Wow, thank you all for the wonderful support!
~flameydramon has written a lovely short story inspired by my picture (and it's just been updated with a 2nd chapter )! You can read it here: [link]
~Woven-Word has also written a fanfic based off of this picture! [link]
Be sure to check them out. I think that they're both very interesting interpretations.

I'm so glad to hear that! I typically don't put in much of a story, but here I had one all fleshed out in my head. I'm really glad that I managed to convey at least some of the idea of that! ^^ Thank you.

This is probably your best piece ever Spyro. You did everything right, in my opinion. I love it

The dark, ominous shadowing and the factory's black smoke in the background gives a dark tone to the peice. I like that.

From the body language and the hints in the background, it is an end of an age. Nothing truly tragic has happened, but simply time passing. Twilight probably graduated and moved to a different study elsewhere, hence her photo of Golden Oaks. The Wonderbolts seem to have a final show, meaning a whole slew of things for Dash. I am guessing that this place is some elaborate home or mansion, with Twilight and Dash living there. Considering how personal photos are placed around, the book with Fluttershy's butterflies on the spine and Rainbow's glasses casually thrown around (which likely means she isn't visiting, but living there, reinforced by the poster).

I can imagine this point being a pause a reminiscing conversation about the old days. But beyond that, I truly have no idea.

This is honestly one of the best works of pony art I've ever seen. The colors and the feelings of this are just <3. Great job!

It's a nice, cool picture, but I think the shadows are a little weird. The shadows are hard, but the source seems to be diffuse. Also, the light has a lot of tint, but the shadow looks like it has none. The mood is pretty neat, though.

SpyroConspirator In reply to WillyGalleta [2012-09-13 05:30:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was really kind of awkward with the lighting in this one... See, the hard shadows were initially supposed to be part of the /inks/, in a way that's often used in comic books and the like. But when I tried it like that, it looked way too dark, and it obscured too much of the detail. Next time, if I make the hard shadowing only semi-opaque, I'll at least try to add the appropriate tint.
Thanks for the criticism. I keep switching little things about this style around, and I'm usually not sure what's working and what's not, so it really is very much appreciated.

Yeah, I can see what you were going for and it probably would look very good in B&W.
I took a look at your gallery and I think I noticed a trend. I believe you should probably try to use less saturated colours sometimes. When you use hard, dark shadows, the saturation difference accentuates the difference. I think it might look good if you went darker and "grey-er" on the medium-shadow tones while keeping some medium and the light tones more colourful. I'm watching you. I'll see what you do next.

Wow. This is quite astonishisng. By any chance, did you get inspired by "League of estraordinary gentlemen" series? Because this style looks very similar: lots of shadows, typical industrial scene in the background and these old pictures on the wall. And obviously - the characters - you obviously see that there is something more to them.

An old "Wonderbolts Final Show" poster - Obviously the final show of the Wonderbolts, but the "custom" glasses hanging on the railing in front of RD is probably the ones she got when she joined the Wonderbolts, and now has had to quit.

Background - I see a lot of factories. Maybe Equestria now has the technology to build factories like these which, might not, require the help of ponies themselves. Which I'm guessing suggest that Equestria has fallen into the industrial period.

Pillars - The pillars are worn out. I'm guessing the library hasn't been cleaned up in a good while. Same with the windows, they're all broken.

Tiara - It's just laying there in the bookshelf collecting dust. It's probably not needed any longer.

Book - I can see a book with similar butterfly's to Fluttershy's cutie mark. Maybe she wrote a book, or maybe it's a autobiography?

Let me know if I missed anything!

Well, I noticed that one of the pictures in the library was THE LIBRARY. So, I would say either the library itself has changed a lot, or this is a new library. This might not even by Ponyville.

The sparse thatch-roofed building in the background seem to suggest Ponyville. Maybe the old library was torn down for some reason and this is the one that replaced it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sbahr2011 In reply to calcwizard [2012-09-12 22:59:42 +0000 UTC]

this seems more likely, since the old library didn't have those sorts of columns or those pipes, though the pipes could be explained by the library getting upgraded to newer technology

This is pretty much amazing. It definitely feels like there's some story here.

Also, Fluttertree has apparently been chopped down and made into a book. Poor girl.

SpyroConspirator In reply to Drewdini [2012-09-12 23:32:15 +0000 UTC]

That was definitely one of my main goals with this picture. I've been sort of obsessing over these little fanfiction-y stories I've got in my head, but I don't really know how to /write/ a story, so I've been trying to draw some.

Also, fluttertreebook idea makes me sad T_T. I'm sure she'd make a lovely book, though! Glad you like it, and thank you for commenting ^^

Drewdini In reply to SpyroConspirator [2012-09-13 03:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see.

Do you ever hope that someone would come along and write a fanfic based on these pictures of yours (probably with your supervision) and use the picture as the cover image?

Aww Don't cry. She's a love story. And not one of those modern "I-had-sex-with-you-so-now-I-totally-love-you" love stories, one of those truly true love stories about truly true love.

SpyroConspirator In reply to Drewdini [2012-09-13 05:39:51 +0000 UTC]

That would be amazing, although I'd be super impressed if someone could make a whole fanfic out of this little drawing. I'd be incredibly honored, for sure.

Fluttershy as a good romance story... <3 hmm... o_o but what if it's a tragedy??

Drewdini In reply to SpyroConspirator [2012-09-13 18:08:16 +0000 UTC]

That it would.

Then everyone would burn the author at the stake.

No one likes seeing a sad Fluttershy.

I love trying to search for a context to this work. If anything, I see this as two friends coming together and talking about many of the things they've missed over time, and even talking about the bad.

Love their poses, don't see anything like this very often, cannot find too many intelligent words besides 'awesome' to describe what I like about them. Body language not seen very often on Pony. The same to their facial expressions.

The detail provides lingering eye candy, causing me to look at the picture for more than a few moments, seeing the goggles and the poster on the wall, the book on the left... all causing my mind to try and think of reasons behind it all. Really one of those pictures that speaks to me. The goggles and the poster of the Wonderbolts could mean that RD is here right after he final show, but the torn fringes speaks otherwise, that it was a longer time ago...

As for improvement... I don't hold the same vision so I can't see any way to make it better. It's great, but I do have one suggestion that might be fun for you to practice:

Play with the shading, the light. I'd, personally, want to see if shadows in the hair of RD would add to the picture. Maybe even try decreasing their iris's and adding more to the eye color? Might bring out more emotion that way. I'm not too sure, just thoughts coming to my mind.

Overall, amazing. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you very, very much for such an in-depth response, Adrian! I'll definitely try to do more with the lighting/shading next time. I like the idea of decreasing the pupil, I'll try that next time. I had seen it done with a very thin, ring-like iris, and I liked it, but I think that this probably would benefit from increasing it, like you said. Thank you, and I'm really glad you like it!
