The picture is loading fine now, but the site went all crazy. It was white and all the buttons were words in blue with a line under them, like links in a document. Nothing was even in the right spot! It was a surreal experience

It's not lazy, it's the intentional use of old art to evoke nostalgia and highlight the differences between Classic and Modern Sonic.
Not to mention that it takes a good chunk of time to make a 3D render from the ground up, even IF you have something to reference it off of. You ever tried working in 3D yourself? If SEGA were truly lazy, they just wouldn't have made the renders at all and just used the old 2D art assets....

Actually I don't think that's lazy at all, it's a nice way to say that they didn't forget about their past works.

I don't think it's meant to be lazy, but instead a callback to those poses, and translated into 3D. Quite epic if you ask me.

It's called Sonic 'Generations'. Callbacks made into 3D are all that can really come of this.
A callback that would be cool, though, would be watching Classic/Modern Knuckles laughing... in 3D animation form!
Or better yet, him teaming up with himself to plan a whole trap on Sonic and Tails after being tricked by Eggman... AGAIN!

lazy maybe. but i'm not a fan of the Dreamcast sonic. for a while the style was unique and interesting, but it's good to see the go back to their roots. though i admit, i prefer the look of 2d sprites instead of 3d characters turned to the side. 2D SPRITES UNITE!
