Description
A lot of my friends are really stoked for Zootopia, but I keep asking the same thing: WHERE ARE THE REPTILES. I decide to take it upon myself to draw what it might look like!As far as I've been told from what I've seen and some sources online, reptiles exist within the world of the film but won't actually be in it. Shame! But ah well, still looks cute anyway.
There's also a lack of amphibians, birds, and sea critters so I might continue doing this as a painting/character design exercise if I get the time.Ā

i guess they didnt do it because humans are mammals, so they just wanted mammals.
all except primates.
furrytopia was an alright movie. i wish they kept the collar thing. it was clever commentary on segregation, but instead they made yet another underdog story.

Yeah I also picked up on that. And I did some searching and found out the same thing. Apparently the director never completely ruled reptiles birds and amphibians out of the zootopia world. But for the movie the focus was the predator/prey angle. And birds reptiles and amphibians are sort of ambiguous when it comes to that. Reptiles are predator to some, but prey to others. So the cast species were kept to animals that were distinctly one or the other because that was the focus of the movie. However they never really said that reptiles, birds and amphibians didn't evolve like other animals. They just apparently don't live in the city of zootopia and must have their own cities. They do have a plan for zootopia 2 and maybe then they will expand into other areas of animal diversity and we may see some reptiles and birds or amphibians. But in the first movie they left them out so not to break the focus of the movie. But the way I see it. They could have at least put them in as backdrop characters that you see in the background. Those nameless non speaking characters that are just there to populate the city. Just so we know they do exist in that world. But they didn't.Ā

I think that it was because the majority of reptiles, birds, and amphibians are predators. Especially true with reptiles and amphibians (as far as I know). I doubt there are many true herbivores that are birds because even hummingbirds eat insects. But, then, in Zootopia insectivores seem to be counted as prey (because bugs aren't sentient). so hummingbirds might be called prey by the mammals. Overall it must have been for simplicity, because when people think of animals they tend to think of mammals first. Many mammals are predators to some and prey to others, including foxes, so that couldn't have been the reason. Yeah the creators said that the others are just on their own islands somewhere.
I am not trying to start an argument, I hope it doesn't sound like I am.

I honestly think it could have still worked. Insectivores, i.e. Armadillos were present in the movie, so insectivorous birds and reptiles could certainly work, while birds of prey, monitor lizards, snakes, and crocodilians could count as predators. I honestly don't think it's all that complicated.

Just watched Zootropolis and I thoroughly enjoyed it, though as a biologist and bird lover I think it should have been appropriately called "Mammaliotropolis"as there were only mammals, and that's just one part of the vast animal kingdom. Reptiles, and especially birds, can be just as complex and for some, intelligent as a lot of mammalian species. When is Ornithropolis coming out? ^_^

Well, its possible that birds and reptiles don't have the nudity taboo like mammals do, due to the fact that they don't have as noticeable genitalia.Ā

I was just talking about the serious lack of reptile, amphibian, insect and even bird representation in Zootopia a few days ago, It's just SO freaking striking to me, so much so that it's just distracting.
Very good pic tho, I love the little gecko lady and chameleon scientist!

Lovely! I simply assumed non-Mammals were non-sapient in the Zootopia world, but the idea of different states or countries or whatever is pretty cool. (Although the inclusiveness message is somewhat weakened: where are immigrant Reptiles or Aves? [1] )
[1] I could understand the lack of immigrants from Insectopia.

Most Excellent! I feel like they where really missing something with the reptiles and others not being in the film, however, disney is thinking about making spinoffs with other animals besides typically loved animals like mammals
and who knows? they might ask you to help design that stuff! it looks great enough :3
God bless ya lad :3

Thought the same, perhaps the divide between reptiles, amphibians, and avian (didnt see any birds either) is more of national aspect like reptiles are Middle-Eastern or avians are Russian, etc.
In other news, good work.

Love the designs of these.
About there being no reptiles.
The director has said while we don't see them or birds they do have there own habitats and in the film judy passes by a bird sanctuary so while not in the film they are in world.

I realized that the anti-racism message would work just as well had there been birds and reptiles living alongside the mammals.

LauriJ In reply to ??? [2016-03-13 10:03:42 +0000 UTC]
Well, my simple answer is that they are simply not sapient the same way mammals are. Of course the movie is ambiguous enough as it is but still.
