Description
A lot of my friends are really stoked for Zootopia, but I keep asking the same thing: WHERE ARE THE REPTILES. I decide to take it upon myself to draw what it might look like!As far as I've been told from what I've seen and some sources online, reptiles exist within the world of the film but won't actually be in it. Shame! But ah well, still looks cute anyway.
There's also a lack of amphibians, birds, and sea critters so I might continue doing this as a painting/character design exercise if I get the time.

The reason the lack of birds and reptiles bothers me is because this film is supposed to be a deconstruction of the world of funny animals, right? And all those other anthropomorphic animal films like Robin Hood, Cats Don't Dance, and Kung Fu Panda have had plenty of bird and reptile characters alongside the mammals, and excluding them makes the film feel really unfaithful to the genre. (Imagine a Star Wars parody that excludes Darth Vader and the storm troopers.)
I saw the movie today, and while I REALLY liked it, I was hoping that there would at the very least there would be a mention of bird and reptile cities...but nope. No mention whatsoever.
Maybe that'll be the plot of the sequel?

The movie does refer constantly to the members of their society as mammals. I hypotheses a secret eugenic extermination of 'the cold-bloods' is hidden somewhere in the backstory of this animated universe!

Well, in the trailer it specifically says that Zootopia is made up of 'mammels'. But I ask myself the same question, what about the other types of animals? Do they have their own cities? And if so, why are they segregated? Or maybe it was only the mammels that became civilized in this world and the others are still just animals. Whatever the actual answer, I LOVE this picture! Absolutely love it. Such great character design here. I would love to see a story about these guys.

if they have Koalas, Kangaroos, Possum, etc. then there is no reason to exclude reptiles, birds, etc. because Koala, Kangaroo, etc., are all Marsupials.

Probably in a sequel, together with the birds, the apes and the sea-life.

Maybe, then again maybe not.
This is what I kind of like about the world of Zootopia: you can do a lot with it. Who knows why the other animals isn't in the first movie. Maybe there are species who doesn't want to live in the city of Zootopia? Or maybe they just have their own, more restricted sections?

Yeah, most movies never show as much as they could due to the need for story progression, they have so muc hto expand with in possible future movies.

Judging from the reviews it seems to be a new classic. If it drags in enough money a sequel shouldn't be too unrealistic.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if it got some kind of spin-off. I mean, I don't think it's gonna be as big as Frozen or Lion King, but it could probably lead to a couple of shorts or a tv-show or something. But if a show happens, I hope they use 2d-animation; CGI that doesn't match the quality of the movie is painful to watch.

agreed, reviews are favourable around the movie and I also hope any potential series isn't 3D, and I speak as someone who watched the kung fu panda: legends of awesomeness series... awful just awful.

Precisely my thought. That series weren't good for several reasons; lackluster writing and cheap CGI-animation for one thing. And why is it that they wasted the opportunity to use Kung Fu Fighting as a the intro song? Dragonriders of Berk definably had some more effort put into it.
2D-animation for a spin-off series wouldn't just look better for a Disney channel demographic and be cheaper; it would also work well with the colorful designs of the movie. I could easily imagine this style of animation being used: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vec7k8… ;

Insects are one group of animals that we know aren't sapient in the world of Zootopia; Yax the Yak is always surrounded by a swarm of flies.

Now this is cute, I especially love the Boa wearing the feather boa and the skink in the sweater.
Of course, the mammal-centric aspect of the film does bug me... but on the whole, I'm indifferent towards it. It seems the gimmick of the movie is simply it's a film starring anthropomorphic animals and... that's it, really and I honestly just have to scratch my head at that. Consider that, some forty-two years ago, Disney released Robin Hood... which was a Robin Hood movie but with anthropomorphic animals and it was fun (Peter Ustinov stole the show as Prince John). In all honesty, I kinda thought Disney's first Anthro film in more than twenty years would have a premise that's a little more... interesting, like something inspired by TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck, or DuckTales.

I love the chamaeleon scientist and the snake!
Buuuut since I pretty much know how this movie goes now, I think it'd best for the internal logic of Zootopia's verse to have non-mammals be non-sapient. (And personally if *I* was writing a sequel I'd have some cameo of a fox, who's farming non-sentient normal chickens, fishes (normal non-sentient fish) And has a pet lizard, that's a normal non-sentient lizard. (To put it to bed in an amusing way.)
I think with the universe they've established, it'd almost certainly end up EXTREMELY jarring and distracting to alter that NOW. (It could really easily only make the verse WORSE, because of what species means in Zootopia. And it'd actually make the verse LESS original anyway.) It might have worked if they'd done it from day one. But no, I think by making the choice to do mammals only, they really should stick with it now. (Same as I wouldn't add anything that's not a bunny or a cat to There She is.)
There's always other animal universe for people who want it differently. (KFP in particular, where it works just fine.) Zootopia I think should just be a universe with sapient animals and wildlife animals... (Kind of like earth in that sense, considering humanity's self appointed separation from the animal kingdom it belongs to really is just typical human puffery with no biological basis.)

According to the disney wiki, the films main premise is the dealing of stereotypes and the difficulty for predator and prey species to get along, which is supposedly the reason the cast is limited to just mammals. But personally, I think the tension would be better if it was mammals vs. birds vs. reptiles and amphibians.

It's strange that we haven't seen any reptile. But reptile (and maybe avian too) could be the non-sentient in Zootopia, that would make sense since the predator need to eat something. But anyway, love your characters here!

I personally think the movie would be better if they had animals other than mammals, mainly because it always felt weird in movies with anthro-animals to exist but normal everyday animals (mostly non-mammalian) to exist.
