what's the difference between an octoling and an inkling?

To it simple. They are just different species. One is a squid. One is an octopus. Though the are very similar.

Ohh, but I was wondering like other differences such as to tell them apart (aside from being a different species and one of them not having the 'bandit mask' around their eyes)

Oh sorry! I guess inlkings have smoother looking tentacles than the octolings. The suction cups are on the outside for octolings and inklings are on the inside. Also sometimes octolings have seaweed on them. For example the scarf around Sage's neck. Or the ones in the game where they have the seaweed in their hair.
In the game the protagonists are the inklings and the antagonists are the octolings.
