I'm shit at explaining so bear with me.

The idea of Twilight outliving her friends never really sat well with me. I always assumed that the amount of magic they've all been exposed to, specifically the magic associated with the Elements of Harmony and the Tree's spirit itself, would extend their lives. I already think ponies live a lot longer than we might by default, due to magic and what not. The Mane Six have a shared lifespan, whatever Twilight's is, the other five (and maybe Spike, idk) share, unless effected by outside forces. Same goes with the Pillars and the Defenders (Student/Young Six). Starlight won't live as long as the others, her lifespan boosted from her exposure to large amounts of magic (School Raze, for instance.) The Crusaders would also live a bit longer than most because of them all getting their cutie marks at the same time and sharing a destiny.

By this point, enough time has passed that most of their direct loved ones; Shining Armor, Cheese, the Crusaders, Sunburst, Trixie, etc (maybe Flurry and Cadance, again idk) have passed on. So, the Council of Friendship decides to stick together until the end of time.

Not intended as an AU but can be seen that way if you like. More intended as my elaborate headcanon/theory.
