Cover pencils for the Grimm Fairy Tales #60 – Phoenix Comic-Con 2011 exclusive from Zenescope Entertainment.

I didn’t realize the show is only a few weeks off until yesterday so figured it was time to start sharing this one. The realization also prompted me to stress out because I have a butt-load of work to do for the show including two more exclusive covers.

Anywho, the concept that was pitched to me was the girl climbing into the cab of a tractor trailer truck with the driver of the truck visible with a silly “OMG!” expression on his face. It sounds like a simple enough idea but if you break it down it’s actually a bit trickier to pull off than it sounds because you have to; make sure the girl is the focus point of the picture, show enough story telling on that figure so that the reader understands that she is actually getting into the truck and be sexy at the same time, show enough of the truck so the reader knows what it is but not so much of it that it becomes over powering to the main focus (the girl), and then somehow stick the driver of the truck in there and make it all work.

I decided to change up the truck driver from the original concept because every time I draw a dude on a cover he has that goofy “OMG!” look on his face and I’m just a little burned out on that, but mostly it didn’t really fit with this layout because that expression doesn’t match the body gesture I had established for him. The only reason I could think of why he would be hunched over and making a face with his eyes and mouth wide open is if he were kicked in the nuts and that hasn’t happened in this picture (yet). Instead I made him with a big shit eating grin and turning up the volume on the radio like, “Hell, yeah, lets PARTY!” which works better with his posture and looks less like I just shoe-horned him in there to make him fit ...which is actually what I did.
