Lol. There's so many little things about HA! that I love. But this running gag was definitely one of my favorites. Helga jumping into Arnold's arms and the two standing there comfortably before finally realizing what was going on.The best part of Helga/Arnold is all the hints between them on the subconscious level. Helga clings to Arnold who holds her without a second thought and she calls out his name when she falls into all the water in the flood and there's this panic-stricken look on his face like he's losing all the good in the world. The weird, magnetic force (THE WRITERS) who kept on throwing them together into various partner-type situations.
Coincidences and oddities and the subtle bits are what makes me love them.

I was also fascinated by that weird thing when Helga screams "ARNOLD!" and Arnold goes (even though he is thousands of miles away from her) "Gerald have you heard someone calling me?"

Lol, Arnold's weird head/hair combo gives me so many problems. That's why I think I prefer to draw him older, I can give him a different hairstyle.

I love how thick Arnold is when it comes to Helga, but it's not just him really. The only people who seem to really have guessed it are Lila, Phoebe and maybe Grandpa. Oh, and Dr. Bliss, but everyone else is PAINFULLY oblivious. Still, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Haha, those running gags between Arnold and Helga were the best because, under the surface, there's so much more to them. All the complexities in their relationship and their subconscious... Such developed characters! ^_^

Lol. I thought the same thing while drawing them. They're very dainty looking, eh?
I also love all the times they bump into one another and Helga has to slap herself. There's so much more than just what's on the surface with these two. There's something more subtle about their relationship that has kept me interested in it even years later.

It would have been great to see Arnold say it, but...even more than him just saying it - I kind of wish we could have got the build up to him returning the feelings. So far it's all been fairly subconscious for him, it would have been nice to see him REALIZING that it's kind of been there all along.

You know what I always thought was great about HA? That there's actual sexual tension between the characters, despite the fact that they're 9 years old. Hahahaha. Win. They don't really act like nine-year-olds, imo, anyway. 8)

No, the whole HA! cast is full of little tiny adults running around. Well - maybe Sid, Stinky and Harold are more kid-like.
But yeah, sexual tension between 9 year olds = lol. I mean, April Fools tango scene? Helga and Arnold pretty much did it right there. In front of everyone.
