Description
In the process of updating my previous Size Comparison for buildings, ships, mecha and vehicles to use vector graphics in Inkscape rather than photos and screenshots resized in PhotoShop. This is a pretty powerful platform and means these entries can comfortably sit in the same .svg file and to scale with massive objects like Starkiller Base from Star Wars, all the way down to (barely) human scale, and is extremely easy to import into another document and further resize to allow for planet-sized objects.
Suggestions for additions welcome! Ideally these should be things that have a canon size or are readily scaleable.
So far I've only recreated what's here but I've added some new entries for interest:
- The X-Seed 4000, a massive arcology proposal even larger than the Ultima Tower
- Some dams and sea bridges for comparison including the notorious Atlantropa project to dam the Mediterranean (there are much larger bridge proposals but I wanted to see just how big Boris Johnson's off-the-cuff proposal of a bridge across the Irish Sea would need to be)
- Statues (fictional suggestions welcome!) including the huge new planned Rama statue
- Triumphal arches (showing the largest Roman triumphal arch, the L'Arc de Triomph, and the largest triumphal arch in the world, built by North Korea)
- The Burj al-Ghazali (AKA the Scepter), from the new Hitman game
- More real-world examples including cathedrals, the Eiffel Tower, and more skyscrapers including Jeddah Tower, which will be the largest free-standing structure on Earth once complete
- Cloud Nine, Buckminster Fuller's real-world proposal for floating Bioshock-esque cities that would see mile-wide tensegrity spheres floated through raising the temperature a few degrees above its surroundings.
Update (14.04.21): Recreated more entries from the original file along with the Abraj Al-Bait (largest clock tower in the world and world's third largest standing structure); in the process of adding the Lesser Redoubt I realised the Greater Redoubt was wrong and should be significantly larger (should be almost 8 miles tall).
Update (01.05.21): Big update in terms of vectoring entries from the original. Added Four Freedoms Plaza, the other sometimes home of the Fantastic Four. Also discovered an interesting issue with Blade Runner - the Tyrell Corporation HQ is stated to be 700 stories, which makes it around 2.5km tall. In 2049 it is absurdly dwarfed by the Wallace Corporation's W-shaped three-tower HQ*... which was built with a scale miniature that works out at 3.5km tall. I think the best way of squaring this circle is to assume that 2049 retcons the original so one of the Tyrell pyramids is significantly smaller than the other at around a half-klik tall (which would still be far more massive than any modern building and dwarfs 'realistic' arcology proposals like NOAH) - but if you take the original as canon and believe the 2049 set designers got it wrong, the Wallace HQ is something like 20km tall.
* Worth noting I've gone with the front view because it shows the 'W', but it's actually much deeper than it is wide.
Update (02.05.21): Added more vectorised entries as well as Urbmon 116 from The World Inside, the alleged Bosnian Pyramids from pseudo-archaeology, the Chateau de Coucy (tallest real-world castle) prior to its destruction in 1917, and the Ogreverse's largest tank for comparison with the Bolo. Suggestions for other huge tanks welcome.
Update (04.05.21): Continued vectorising the backlog and added the Tournament of Power Arena from Dragon Ball Super and the 75th Hunger Games Arena. The titular dome (the FAYZ) from Under the Dome is 30km in diameter and will be included in the file with larger ships and habitats such as Rama, Mantle's Approach and Asgard. Suggestions for other large arenas welcome. I also considered including Snowpiercer but it's far too small and far too long for any reasonable raster export; I may include it in an .svg download. Update #2: Went ahead and added a very simple version of Snowpiercer with just the engine detailed.
Update (06.05.21): Added the Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir (which will be the tallest religious building in the world once complete), the Taj Mahal, the Boeing Everett Factory (the largest building by volume), the largest known hill fort, Maiden Castle (whose name has nothing to do with a maiden but is derived from the Celtic mai-dun, Great Hill), and the Leveler, the massive logging machine from Ferngully (scaled from the cabin; let me know if there's a canon size for this!).
Update: (09.05.21): Added many more from the back catalogue including ships, together with the Stratolaunch (largest plane by wingspan) and Peach's Castle from the Mario games.
Update (11.05.21): Adding in more ships including the proposed Triple Deuce mega-yacht.
Update (18.05.21): Completed vectorising all the buildings, (sea) ships and planes from the original Size Comparison . Added new entries - the city transformer's alt modes (note that Metroplex and Fortress Maximus are wildly inconsistent and mostly are comparable in size and far smaller than depicted here), the Necromonger Conquest Icon from The Chronicles of Riddick, the Titanic and Hindenburg, Tower Sky from The Tower, the Wynand Building from The Fountainhead (based on the film design and the requirement that it be the tallest skyscraper in New York - in the world in the film - at the time), and the Eyrie Pyramid, the dystopian future version of the Eyrie Building from Gargoyles.
Update (22.05.21): Added the Forerunner Citadel from Halo and the real-world Prague Castle (the largest castle by area in the world, which contains St. Vitus Cathedral, making the castle complex arguably taller than the former Chateau de Coucy), and reorganised the whole thing again.
Update (24.05.21): Added the Chrysler Building, New Century Global Center (the world's largest building by floor area), RahXephon, Watkin's Tower (the British answer to the Eiffel Tower, it would have been the tallest building in the world until the construction of the Empire State Building and the UK's tallest building to this day had the construction company not gone bankrupt), and Berserk's Falconia (scaled from the outer walls).
Update (25.05.21): Added Castle Grayskull and Tatlin's Tower, the Soviet answer to the Eiffel Tower, which would have incorporated a spiralling track for visitors to be whisked to the top of what would have been in 1920 the world's tallest structure.
Update (28.05.21): Added the tracked carrier from Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, Zodanga from the 2012 John Carter adaptation and a new Kaiju section.
Update (21.01.22): Added Dubai Creek Tower (under construction), India Tower, Azerbaijan Tower, the Bride Tower and Dubai City Tower as well as reworking Laputa to be more clearly the book version.
Update (30.01.22): Added the Colossal Titan, the Sandworm from Dune, and the Star Wars Sarlacc to the Kaiju section.
