Description
This is for =psivamp 's SurReal Awareness Contest. My piece is about anorexia (I hope that is quite obvious!). This is a subject that is very close to me (not that I have ever been anorexic), but many of the people I know have suffered eating disorders. And those disorders suck. So many symptoms...most of them ending up in death. So people, please, dont become anorexic or bulimic.
This was a cool piece to create. I had a lot of trouble burning the shadows for the rubs and stuff, but thanks to =DoNotAttempt , who showed me some tricks, I finally got it.
All of the stock is mine
Oh, and the mirror is shrouded, or unclear. This is a representation of not knowing who one is, or self destruction. Take it in any way you wish, just know that the pose, mirror, and thing inside the mirror all have a concept.

it's unapologetically discomforting. how fitting for such an unforgiving disease.
She is literally & figuratively fading into nothingness & despair... or is she being PULLED into this vapidness- 'eaten' away by the disease? A little bit of both, im sure- and as the disease progresses, it becomes more of the latter- the disease takes over her, it 'devours' her whole, till she loses herself completely- ironically, the same battle is taking place on her physically as well- as it chips away at her confidence, her strength, & her soul, it's taking away bits & pieces of her flesh & muscle too. she is desperately reaching out from the grips of the disease. Reaching out for help? of course. but is she also reaching out for the "mirror"? The mirror that's just beyond her grip- hopelessly clawing her way to that which is unatainable- that which doesn't exist. no matter how skinny she gets, she only sees fat. no matter how much weight she loses, it will never be "perfect".
But anorexia goes far beyond, far deeper, than the strive for unatainable physical perfection. The core of the disease is the obsessive need, or 'crave' for control. Seeking order amidst the chaos. Controlling that which she feels she CAN control, to balance the rest of her life which she feels completely & helplessly powerless over. But another unfortunate irony is that, the more she compulsively counts input & output, and the more she deprives, for the sake of order & control- the more powerful the disease gets, and thus the less 'in control" she really is. So is that what she's reaching out for? Desperately striving for a sense of control, being uknowingly sucked away, & ripped apart in this strive for control & perfection? What a sad & incredibly lonely disease.
In terms of design, & composition- the initial focal point is the upper part of her body- the ribcage area- your eye is drawn there first, mostly because of the highlights of the ribs contrasting with the dark shadows in between. That area almost glows & beckons you- especially with her pose resembling half of a heart- or, more or less, a broken heart. But the lines created by this pose, immediately pull your eyes up around the curve, down the line of her arm, & then, splash- thrown out unto the mirror, where you stay. If you were to analyze this- it's her way (and/or the artists way), of bringing you through the emotions of this disease, & then spitting you out to rest in front of the mirror to look at yourself. how do u see yourself in this mirror?

Great work!
When you're anorexic you're loosing yourself for the mirror, if you loose the mirror it would be the badest thing ever...

Has got a deeper sense... I have to admit that you catched the whole problem of anorexia and bulimia here, and you are one of those saying that it is killing- not sexy. I can't stand people saying that it is not a problem. It is really big problem and noone can say that it is good.
