Description Schizophrenia

A person diagnosed with schizophrenia may experience hallucinations (most commonly hearing voices), delusions (often bizarre or persecutory in nature), and disorganized thinking and speech. The latter may range from loss of train of thought, to sentences only loosely connected in meaning, to incoherence known as word salad in severe cases.

Social withdrawal, sloppiness of dress and hygiene, and loss of motivation and judgement are all common in schizophrenia. There is often an observable pattern of emotional difficulty, for example lack of responsiveness. Impairment in social cognition is associated with schizophrenia, as are symptoms of paranoia; social isolation commonly occurs.
In one uncommon subtype, the person may be largely mute, remain motionless in bizarre postures, or exhibit purposeless agitation

Dissociative Identity Disorder (also known as Multiple Personality Disorder)

... is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a condition in which a person displays multiple distinct identities or personalities (known as alter egos or alters), each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment.

"famous" examples:

main characters of "Black Swan", "A Beautiful Mind " & "The White Sound "/"Das weisse Rauschen " = schizophreniacs

Gollum (Lord of the Rings) & Marik (Yugioh DuelMonsters) = suffering from DID/MPD

______________________________________________________________

That (scarily common) misconception is one of my biggest pet peeves ever.
I have a raging hate on that person, who invented this shirt, that says "I'm schizophreniac..." on the front and "Me, too" on the back.
And I back button every fanfic, that gets above explained illnesses mixed up, no matter how awesome everything else might be... well, and then I usually mail the author and tell them, they got something mixed up as nice as I can.

Here the PLZ version:

i'm so tired to hear my mum and sister say that someone must be "schizo" or schizophrenic because they seem to have multiple personalities (while that's not even the case, they just don't know what it actually looks like)...

i am always near to scream at them when they say it again... i know friends who suffer from schizophrenia and i am disgusted everytime i hear that people call it having multiple personalities...

I would like to know where that false image did come from. Schizophrenia got displayed as having different personalities to me in books, cartoons, by comedians etc. So I spent most of my life believing that this is what it is. Until my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia. "What, he has multiple personalities? He can be weird and unpredictable here and there, but I think this is a little extreme". He used to hear noises at night that didn't let him sleep when he was uncomfortable. When he slept with my mother in the same room, he didn't have that problem. And when he asked us the next morning if we heard XY, it was so loud that he woke up from it, I never knew what he was talking about.

THat's two entirely different things, it would just be interesting to know when and why this got so mixed up.

(This is really late but...)
I've actually had Schizophrenia since I was 11, and I totally agree with this! People are always like "which Meagan am I talking to today?" and I'm like "What?". Then they say ''well you have that...what do they call it? It starts with an s." and I say "Schizophrenia? that's not about having a lot of personalities."

Thank you for this!

And they also think that schizophrenics are crazy who are going to kill their families and friends. >_<

I'm really tired of all this stupidity... I really wish people would do their research before saying stupid things like that. I've actually told a friend about my problem and she was like 'well are you going to kill your family?'.

I could go into a rant of broken English (because that's what happens when I rant) but I'll stop here. ^_^

tarmarr [2012-06-05 16:00:00 +0000 UTC]

I had no idea people thought it meant multiple personality disorder -__- how stupid can you be? If you google "schizophrenia" (as I have because I'm trying to write a character with this disorder, as well as the fact that I'm simply interested in it) you get a plethora of sites telling you exactly what it is (and few that tell what it is like). In order to believe it was multiple personality disorder you'd have to be very ignorant..or not know how to use google.
Anyway, I've known what it was since I heard schizophrenia for the first time...

ohmymy
I knew I was right!

I actually shouldve done my reasearch instead of letting other people correct me.

since a lot of people when i was using scitzophrenia as a character trait only as an explanation for hallcinations and unorginized speech and thinking they kept telling me thats not what it meant and that it meant split personality.

too the piont i believed it and started using it that way too >.>

I guess you cant believe everything youre told even if by multiple people ?...

SSjUmi In reply to mechanicalmasochist [2012-04-05 22:37:53 +0000 UTC]

No, I guess you can't

I'm studying psychology, but even I have to keep checking, if I'm right with my definition, because it keeps confusing me, that almost everyone on that planet seems to misunderstand the actual meaning of the word schizophrenia The worst part: When I try to correct people they won't believe me. I'm like "Dude! I study that shit! I wrote exams about schizophrenia!" Them: "No no no, you're wrong, schizophrenia = split personality!" Me: *flips a table*

I never understood why people mixed them up. Possibly because I was taught the difference at an early age, but yeah. Not to mention MPD is rather self explanatory.

I remember when I first heard that people mixed them up a lot I was like "Dur..... REALLY? But they're so different!"
