I think either theory is viable.
I'm not the one who originally designed it so I wouldn't know what was in mind when it was done. If you ask JK over on her lineart though she might tell you what she was going for. : )

It looks gorgeous! I am really happy to see such lovely coloring on my drawing. The lighting is especially nice, and I'm so happy you made the crosses on his thighs and wings red, it's just what I imagined and hoped.
