Stable-san — Pluto is Number Nine

Description Today, Thursday the 24th of August Pluto was downgraded from planet status to "Dwarf Planet" status. I myself am very upset that 2500 scientists, less then five percent of Astronomers, can make this big of a decision.

I refuse to call Pluto anything but planet number nine. Sorry purists but Pluto will live on as a planet.

Please use this, or if nothing else favorite it if you aren't a paid member. Give Pluto the love it needs!

No, it isn’t if Pluto was a planet children in school would now have to learn 13 or even 14 planets, within a few decades they would’ve to learn several hundred. So no it isn’t a planet
even if that was not enough of a reason, Pluto is by definition not a planet

The reason why they said it wasn't neccesarily because it doesn't have an atmosphere. Sooo...Mercury isn't a planet either. I think they shouldn't have a say that Pluto isn't a planet.

JustAPerson1237 In reply to wolfplanet102 [2018-10-30 16:45:00 +0000 UTC]

No, that wasn’t the reason, where did you even get that absolutely idiotic idea from
secondly Mercury has an atmosphere, it is so thin it might as well not exist, but it’s there

SkulktheNeonFox In reply to wolfplanet102 [2011-10-16 07:45:16 +0000 UTC]

that wasn't the reason why. it was that the definition of a planet covered three things: it is in orbit around the Sun, gravity has shaped it into a sphere and that it has cleared out it's orbital neighborhood. the latter meaning it has become gravitationally dominant, and there are no other bodies of comparable size other than its own satellites or those otherwise under its gravitational influence.

Pluto does not qualify as a planet because it has not cleared its orbital neighborhood; this is because its orbit goes through the Kuiper Belt, an area at the very edges of the Solar System that house many comets, asteroids, other small planet-like bodies and lots of debris left over from the creation.

because it has not cleared it's orbital neighborhood, it must mean that it's too small to be able to do so. thus, Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet.

D< The song they taught me in Pre-K said Pluto was a planet, so therefore it is!

I think it's ridiculous that they actually wasted their time with something so stupid. @__@ I mean, everyone still calls it a planet, regardless.

Wait a second... you would rather listen to the word of scientists from almost 70 years ago who had never been into space and had only the simplest telescopes over the word of modern scientists who not only have high-power electric telescopes, but are able to clearly see things beyond this galaxy?

Honestly, the scientists made a mistake. Are you people still upset about their discovery that Earth isn't the center of the solar system? Seriously people.

Stable-san In reply to MexWolf [2008-09-07 15:15:52 +0000 UTC]

I appreciate your opinion, thanks for commenting.

Personally, and I can only speak for myself, I was rather annoyed at the fact that only 3-5% of astronomers were actually involved in the decision. (Sorry, if that's not quite right. My source links have gone down since I last looked at all this about two years ago so I'm running on memory.)

Another thing to keep in mind is that when it was found that the Earth wasn't the center of the universe there were plenty of people who were upset, rather rashly so. As time passed though people understood the reasoning more. The same thing will happen with this. People in general just don't like change.

Thanks again though, I can understand where you are coming from.

MexWolf In reply to Stable-san [2008-09-08 08:49:34 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, the thing I really find odd is that people are angry at today's scientists for saying that Pluto is not a planet, when in all logic they should blame the ones who made the mistake in the first place.

My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas

These scientists are crazy if they think they can take out Pluto as a planet and take out the "pizza" in the mnemonic phrase that we all know since elementary school. Without Pluto, what's there "nine" of"? NOTHING. Pluto is still a planet in my eyes, no matter how small it is.
