Description
This night was rough once again. Rolled under her blanket, Elijah did her best to keep her eyes shut, despite the instinctive urge to reopen them the moment she heard a noise. Even late, the Den was still active, may it be kits who refused to sleep, the Den Mothers cleaning whatever mess had been done throughout the day, or some kits’ Kibbees having their night zoomies. Any sound, but each of them stressed her out.
She felt as if she was in danger, and at any moment, the heartwarming ambiance of the Den would be replaced by the cold feeling of a Predator nearby. But overexhaustion was about to get the best of her, her eyelids felt heavy like rocks, and her brain was filled with fog.
But, she tried to remember this song. Deep inside her memories, a long, lost song; one that put her mind to peace, like a warm embrace, the songs that her Lune could have sung her long ago.
A feeling of security, of protection, as she drifts into a long, long slumber.
The next time she opened her eyes, she was forced to close them again. The bright light in the room she was in surprised her, but before she could see where she was, she felt that it was not her bed, or the Den. It was colder, the ground she was laying on was not soft, but hard, like a thousand of pebbles. And the scent was different, like a shore, a faint scent of salt in the air.
She finally opened her eyes and saw the beautiful scenery that offered itself to her. Thousand and thousand of beautiful crystals in cool colors, reflecting each other infinitely. A graceful lake in the middle of the cave, its surface shining bright and reflecting the festival of colors around it. Maybe Elijah would have been frightened to know she was nowhere known, but she was in awe of this spectacle.
Before she finally noticed she was not alone.
In front of her, originating from the water, was a strange head shaped object. Six black whiskers swirled from what was supposed to be the snout, and three magnificent crystals decorated the white surface. Other of these crystals covered the black body behind it, one that the kit could not see the end of.
But what was strange was her reflection in the crystals on its face. It was her, but it was not doing what she was doing. It was staring right back at her, curiously, approaching, cautious. Before a sweet, candide voice spoke to her.
“Curious.” Elijah could see her own reflection speak to her, in a voice that seemed familiar, and yet unfamiliar. “You have been marked by my Guardian... Will you stay with me?”
She tilted her head curiously, in confusion. She did not understand what the being meant by “Guardian”, and even less by “marked” - her body did not look like it was bearing any mark, after a quick inspection on this one.
“My Guardian… The Black Swan. You bear his marks.” the being in front of her seemed to understand her confusion, despite how no words were spoken. But this was not sufficient for the young Kit, who blinked as a reply. This name was unknown to her, and whoever she could think about, none of them matched the description of a black swan.
“You do not know his name…” she could notice the reflection sit down and ponder. While it was a very strange and unfamiliar sight to see herself speak, the way this other her acted was greatly familiar and likely. “Maybe you will recognize his song?”
When she heard the word song, her ears slightly peaked up - as much as they could - and she raised her body to stand up curiously. Her mirror self took a short breath, before singing in a voice that seemed totally different from the one she has been using. But a highly familiar one - loud, rattling, sometimes hissing, one that would not fit the image used in the crystals, but one that Elijah knew. And the song, it was the lullaby she had heard, the one that sung to her that she was safe… At this realization, the kit jumped on her four paws, her eyes shining with a new light of excitement and admiration. Her echo ceased the song, now looking back at her.
“Have you recognized it?” the tone employed insisted that a positive reply was the only answer, as the mirror could not help a smile. Elijah jumped with joy, before rushing toward the white mask, planting her two forepaws on its sturdy surface as she tried to stand up on her hind legs, her only visible eye staring right into the diamond shaped crystals.
Who was this being? How did they know about this? Was it the same who saved her, long ago before she joined the Den? Or was it a related one?
Whatever the reason, or just anything, Elijah could only see the being as safe, and comforting. Her own reflection smiled back, like a child who was happy to find someone like them. Its whiskers gently flow, lighting touching Elijah’s body as if to learn about how she looked.
“You may refer to me as the Echo of the Lake.” when someone introduces themselves, you should introduce yourself back, as Elijah was taught - but before she could open her mouth to attempt to pronounce her name, the Echo surprisingly already knew what she was about to say. “Elijah… Do you want to stay with me?”
The small kit’s eyes were as shiny as the crystals around them, as she started to swing her tail happily. Despite the coldness of the mask, the lack of expression in the diamonds on its face, all she could feel and see was something warm, something friendly, like a newfound family. It looked like her, sounded like her, acted like her - just like her brothers before.
She nodded her head several times, before offering her biggest smile. She does want to stay with Echo, and their presence was so reassuring to her that she almost forgot her fears.
“Great!” the figure reflected on the diamond almost jumped, but seemed to realize that they got too excited, and corrected their behavior, trying to look more serious. “I’m really glad, Elijah… Time is running out, but we’ll meet again, when you need me, just call upon your reflection. I will reply to you.”
The kit separated herself from the large mask, putting her small paws back on the ground, as her smile faded to leave only confusion. But this time she could not get an answer, and the last words pronounced by the Deep One echoed in the cave, as the crystals around her shone brightly, more than ever, in a blinding light. The overwhelming light forced the small Folk to close her eyes, as the entire world around her faded away.
When Elijah opened her eyes again, a similar light appeared to her - but it was nothing like crystals, but the sun’s light. She felt as if something had changed in her Phylakardia, something she could not point out yet.
Raising her body from her bed, she snorted, before raising on her hind paws to inspect her Phylardia curiously.
Her reflection on this one smiled back at her.
