Well..... This was a surprise. So yeah. I heard the word: A new Godzilla movie and it's making bank at the box office. I'll be honest, I was a little indifferent to this film at first. Probably because of this being advertised as a "horror movie". Funny enough I was watching some Godzilla analog horror and I was like, " wasn't there a new Godzilla movie that's coming out this year? Maybe I should give it a chance." So, I boot up the trailer and I still was a little indifferent. Until finally I saw it in theaters today, and I was impressed. So, I'll give you my pre thoughts on this movie, then I'll tell you my overall thoughts. Ok? Here we go.
Before seeing it in theaters, I wasn't buying the fact that this is a horror film. For one thing, the design was playing it safe. As so as his origins. Say what you want about Shin Godzilla; that design is terrifying! Just this lining eldritchic monstrosity created by nuclear waste. Constantly mutating as it sees fit. Where as here, we're back to basics. But then a thought popped into my head and I understand what they're doing. Let me tell you the difference between physical horror and mental horror. Physical horror is what you can see and don't understand. Shin Godzilla is a good example. Mental horror is when your mind is your greatest fear. You have no idea what goes on in there and that terrifies you. Minus one goes to that direction. You don't know when he's going to strike. Let alone what he would look like. Godzilla in this movie doesn't really appear that much, and that's kinda the idea. Do you know what I mean? So, that's one advantage Minus One has, and definitely carried home on the big screen. That, and the fact that this Godzilla can actually smile. That alone is freaky. I'm not gonna lie.
Speaking of which, the visuals. Upon looking at the trailer I immediately was like "Ok. This is CLEARLY CGI." Suitmation seems to be a thing in the past now. Then again, CG can bring things like Godzilla smiling again and his spines popping up and slamming down when using his atomic breath. I thought that was a nice addition. But the most important thing is the titles itself. I was confused about the title. Minus One? Why Minus One? Some research was done and it turns out the movie takes place in post war Japan. A time Japan was recovering from the bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That would actually explain why Godzilla has his 1954 roar. This movie is essentially a remake of 1954. Well, I was kinda right. But the way they defeated Godzilla was a little different. Speaking of which the plan sorta lost me. The plan was complicated. So, I'm just gonna summarize it. (Spoiler alert!) The plan was to basically drown Godzilla by trapping him into a trench, and if that doesn't work, they'll bring back up to the surface where pressure balloons will freeze him. That makes no sense at all. What if you were to try to drown a turtle? It wouldn't work because it's aquatic.
The last thing I wanna bring up is how Godzilla acts. I mentioned before his design didn't look that scary. It's how he's portrayed that makes him scary. And I can definitely say he is more animalistic in this one. The reveal of him took me completely by surprise! Like I didn't expect him to show up immediately. But when he did, I was like "Oh shit!" In fact I was like that every time he was on screen. But the most jarring thing about it is...... there's only one city destruction scene. Yeah, usually in a Godzilla movie you get two or three. Here you only get one. But then again, that's not the focus. The focus is on the human character. More specifically a kamikaze pilot that failed his mission and is living this burden of lost comrads. But for those who likes city destruction, there's always the Monsterverse. I guess you can count his first appearance in this movie as a rampage. But it's more so him wanting to kill humans. So yeah, Minus one is impressive. I had low expectations and this film impressed me.
