I think its becasue you can relate to this Cartman that you like him now.
When I was younger I was just like Cartman! I was worse than him in some areas, and not as bad in others. But as I got older and became someone completely different...I don't like Cartman as much.
I think being able to relate to him has a lot to do with how much or how little you like him! ^^
