Description The second of two elnin growths I finished a while back. This is Carnelian. A colorful elnin that travels and appraises items, though their eye for others isn't half bad either. They are fond of trinkets, small accessories, and oddbob items. Appearance wise they take after their dad a bit more so but personality wise I'd like to say they have a bit of each of their parents. ovob

Such impressive tails! Love the shading you did on them, very effective. And the colours are such a cool combination!

So many hours of shading those tails. It was a good challenge though. All kudos to Khel for the awesome colors though. She designed their kittom form. ;v; <333

Yeah, things've been good I got an internship about a year ago and they kept me on and I really like it there. And thanks, I'm glad you like what I've been working on I love the stuff you're been making as well! How have things been for you?

starbask In reply to JKSketchy [2018-11-25 18:40:13 +0000 UTC]

That's awesome that the internship kept you on and that it's going well! Being in a job you enjoy is so nice!

Things have been going well for me too. I'm back home renting the house more or less here since my mom spends most of her time at her bf's place. It was just more economical to pay her than a different landlord. I got a job at a small local company doing web development about 2 months out of college and it's been a lot of fun. c: They have a great culture at the place I work and my coworkers are really nice so I hope to be here a long time.

Other than that just doing art and gaming on the side and visiting family on and off. Ah and I lost my last cat from my childhood to illness two-ish years ago and adopted two kittens not too long after. They've really lit up my life and kept me busy (my older of the two has been figuring out how to break into cabinets and closets this year. rip.)! It's a good time though. c:

That's cool about renting your mom's place Like you said, you don't have to worry about landlords that you don't know. I'm hoping to move out soon myself. That's awesome about the local company! It sounds really nice

I'm so sorry about your cat I'm glad the kittens are helping though! What're their names?

starbask In reply to JKSketchy [2018-11-25 22:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's pretty nice. I'm lucky to be on really good terms with my family so it works out pretty well. I don't have to worry about when things break since my mom's happy to have someone looking after the place that would let her know before things become a bigger issue. c:

And I have two of them, Charlie and Marlow. c: Charlie was orphaned at 3 weeks and a friend of a friend hand fed her until I got her around 5 weeks old looking like a small bean. And she's really grown up since then.

And this is Marlow. I adopted him from the local shelter. He's my resident troublemaker and ham. He's also older than Charlie by about 2 months and a little bit bigger.

They're pretty good pals even though they do skirmish once in a while. (Unfortunately both are dominant cats so they keep trying to boss each other around.) >>;;

Naw such cute babies! At least they get along most of the time We've only ever had one dog at a time so we've never really had that problem. That's one of the big cons to me moving out is our dog would stay with my parents cause he's a big boy and most of the places I'd be looking at probably wouldn't allow big dogs x-x Also he loves them and has only even lived in their house so I'd feel bad uprooting him like that.

starbask In reply to JKSketchy [2018-11-25 22:22:35 +0000 UTC]

That stinks. :< Yeah I use to have 4 cats growing up. I didn't really mind having that many and they all got along pretty well but most apartments probably won't accept more than 2 cats if I ever have to move. I'm also against declawing my kitties so if that's a restriction on apartments I'll have to pass those ones up some day. I feel you though. I moved into an apartment for two years in college with Snickers and my roomies and it wasn't the most ideal situation for him but his alternative was staying at the house here and no one would be around to give him attention, just probably drop ins for feeding him so after my oldest cat of 21 years passed away I took Snickers with me since there'd be nothing really at home for him. Moving them around though is stressful. I usually take Charlie and Marlow to the vet together because Marlow gets a bit of anxiety with travel and having Charlie there calms him down a lot. It works out in the end. >>b Hopefully when you move out you can still visit your dog quite a bit. ovob

Do a lot of apartments only allow cats that are declawed? I've never had cats so I've never really looked into it, that's limiting if that's the case ;-; Having two cats so they can calm each other down sounds nice! I've known a few people who have gotten multiple dogs so that they have playmates at all times but we've just never had more than 1. And yeah, I would try to visit home often to see him

starbask In reply to JKSketchy [2018-11-29 06:20:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm not so sure. I know it's a thing but I haven't done enough apartment hunting around here or other places to know if it's a regional thing or apartments somewhere at a distance. In general I like to have cats in pairs. I feel like if they get along it really helps keep them busy otherwise they just get into all sorts of shenanigans at the house while I'm gone. >>;;; Granted sometimes my current two still do. XD;;.... They're cohorts. lol

Dogs are a lot of energy though and dedication. I'd want to bring my dog into the office with me if I got one just purely because I don't think I'd be home enough to fulfill their needs. That said for those same reasons I have two cats instead of a dog. Sweet puppers but they definitely deserve an owner that can be around to fulfill their emotional needs during the day and also get them out on walks when there's actually some daylight. c: I hope you get back to see him often. I'm sure he'll appreciate not being moved but you'll be missed a lot too. >v

Thanks I might need to consider another type of pet that wouldn't require as much attention as a dog. Like a hamster? I haven't looked into smaller animals before.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

starbask In reply to JKSketchy [2018-12-08 22:49:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm not familiar with hamsters aside from I hear female dwarf hamsters can be...quite aggressive if not raised well. x-x;; I don't know though for sure. I'd just say do a lot of research before jumping into any new pet. Personally I grew up with rats and mice. Gerbils I hear are...a little more fickle with there being more than 1 and sometimes will pick on each other or worse if you're dumb (I once heard a story about someone who...thought it'd be funny to dye their gerbil with cool aid and after a weekend leaving them alone they came home to 2 gerbils instead of 3. >>;;; That's awful. People can be so foolish.).

Some people are really bothered by rats/mice but honestly rats are the best small pet experience I've had and we use to have quite a variety. They're really smart, don't usually live /too/ long compared to cats and dogs, and are pretty friendly if you handle them/get them use to you. |D.... I'll always recommend rats if someone's looking to get any sort of rodent pet. They're just a little more low maintenance with a lot of personality. People just usually don't like their tails. :< Good luck all the same! If you do decide to check out other creatures just research a lot.

We usually got at least 2 rats (since they are social animals/will get lonely if you leave them by themselves) but...you just had to make sure you had them all of the same gender otherwise baby rats are a thing...and generally even some store feeder rats we got didn't look like they were going to have babies. After getting two females both ended up having litters and we re-homed the babies back to a pet store. Most of them anyway...they were really cute when they were growing up though. TvT A bunch of really good kids. If it weren't for my cats and job I would probably still have rats. I just don't think I could make time to hang out with them to form any sort of meaningful bond with the cats around now and not being home as much since my two cats would just hover...bleh.

Sorry I haven't gone through my inbox in a while But those are good things to know about rodent pets! I don't know much about them so if I do decide to take that route I'll have a lot of research to do first.Β

That's cool about rats! One of my best friends had rats and she really liked them. I got to spend some time with them a while ago and I'm really not used to small pets so it was really different for me but they seemed really cool. She told me the same thing about getting same sex rats and she had 3 female rats. That's cool that you were able to re-home the babies through the pet store. Did they have a lot of babies?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

starbask In reply to JKSketchy [2019-01-19 18:50:16 +0000 UTC]

It's ok. lol There's always a lot of notifs to go through! And yeah research is pretty important. c:

They're really different for sure. Not like dogs or cats I don't own rats anymore because it's not safe with my cats that are pretty kitten-ish still after 2 years. I think they'd hurt them if I didn't supervise constantly (which I'd have to do regardless) but it means less time with both the cats and rodents with them always being on the fence cohabiting when I would have the rats out. ;

When I did have rats oh yeah there were a lot of babies. XD;;; At least 10 if not more of them...just from 2 rats. The babies were rehomed to the store but I'm not sure they didn't end up being feeders necessarily either. When we were young it was rough to know things like that since we were just kids and our parents just knew that we couldn't take care of 12+ rats. >>;; We did have up to 6 at once though. Those were some fun times. XD A very rowdy bunch. They're really curious it's pretty cute. We use to like to feed them cheerios (the plain kind) as treats once in a while and watch them carefully take them one at a time and munch away. c:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JKSketchy In reply to starbask [2019-01-19 19:15:11 +0000 UTC]

Naw, I didn't know they likes cheerios But I guess that's not really surprising either. Yeah 12+ rats would've been a lot. And that makes sense not having rats with your cat, both because of the cat and not having as much time to give either of them.

I was petsitting for a friend while they were away during the holidays and they have a really cool beta fish and it got me thinking of starting even smaller with pets when I move out. I feel like fish aren't nearly as interactive as nearly any other pet, but since I'll have a lot to get used to at first it might be best to have a low maintenance pet like that for a while

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

starbask In reply to JKSketchy [2019-01-20 00:30:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah timing is hard. XD And that's neat you got to pet sit. I'd say if you start with a beta though don't buy into a lot of the bs they feed you at some pet stores. >>;;;; "They can live in a bowl." "Low maintenance." It's all relative. ; They're often advertised as being able to not need much and compared to some pets I guess this is true but while they can live in these conditions it'd be kind of like living in your own bathroom your whole life without a running fan. >>... Nothing to really filter out the gunk. Not a whole lot of space. Nothing to help with air flow.

I'd say just do your research if you're going the fish route. I grew up with a 20 gallon at my mom's house and a 55 gallon fish tank at my dads. XD Both fresh water. Live plants are a lot of work but they put oxygen into the water. If you don't have live plants you'll need an air stone to help with the oxygen levels in the tank. Depending on what your base is you could also end up with too many nitrates from decomposing plants or their own waste.

Betas I hear also do better in warmer water/having a water heater for fish in their tank helps and they generally aren't fond of heavy current so if you get a filter and a good sized tank for them (not just a bowl as a lot of people advertise is "acceptable") then you'll want to see if there's a way to lessen the current. I think they tend to stick near the tops of tanks too...so you can usually house them with shrimp and specific smaller fish. Just depends. Compared to goldfish they're pretty different since goldfish are a bit hardier, like colder water, and tend to be significantly more dirty. So....I guess I wouldn't say fish are low maintenance it's just where the maintenance is. XD;;; Maybe not as many emotional needs....but compared to pets like rodents, or cats, or dogs you don't have to regulate the air they breathe and temperatures fall more into line with what we like as mammals. <<;;; Just as a heads up. I'm sure you probably have awareness of this stuff though. Just thought I'd toss it out there.

Ooooo this is all really good to know! Yeah, I'll need to do more research regardless, but I wasn't aware of heat stones for fish tanks and I've never had a tank that had multiple species in it at once before. I still have my old tank from when I was younger and it just had goldfish, not sure of the size of that one. I'll have to look into that more, thanks!
