Quite a while back now, I was involved as a concept artist in the Journey of the Spark MLP fan project, which was to be the fandom's first fully animated, feature-length MLP fan film. It was an exciting prospect at the time.As is well known now, this animation project was ultimately cancelled. Last I heard, it was still slated to be a radio play. Not sure if that's still true...

But I have recently received word that it is now ok for me to let some of my concept ideas see the light of day.
This here was my design for a "grown up" version of Twilight, (she is the embodiment of the element of magic) which filly Twilight sees as a kind of inspirational vision.

Like any popular fandom the hype will eventually end.
There's still a fandom but not at the levels of 2011 or 2012.
Sad that this project won't go on as planned.

Yes, it is sad. But I suppose it was almost inevitable that Hasbro would issue a C&D, even if there weren't internal problems.
The fandom won't be as aggressively popular as it was in the beginning, but I think it will persist long-term, just in a lower and more stable form.

Maybe it's a good thing the fanbase is slimming down.
That means those that went on board the hype train and the mental deviates
(The deviates that made those horrific Sonic the Hedgehog fan works 10 to 5 years ago)
are leaving.
And only those that really give for the show will stay... hopefully.
However I noticed that High Quality fan cartoons on youtube are on the decline too.
Like Snowdrop and 2 Sisters Plays...

I'm not convinced that the fandom is sliming down. I mean, Bronycon this year had over 10,000 attendees!
However, the initial hype has perhaps died down, and maybe that translates into fewer bandwagon riders, and fewer "deviant" productions like the ones you mentioned.
As for impressive productions, we have the upcoming Legends of Equestria role playing game, a fallout-equestrian-themed game, several popular tabletop games, including that one about Twilight's secret shipfic folder, as well as many ongoing web comics and art pieces online.
I think a declining trend is debatable at this point, but I do expect it will happen eventually.
