Description
UPDATE, December 14th, 2014: I changed the proportions and layout a bit so it could potentially work better as an actual poster.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have an idea for a comic series; specifically, an adaptation of a truly awesome pony fanfiction, which is a G1-G4 crossover. www.fimfiction.net/story/71660…
As an 80s baby, I retain a certain nostalgic attachment to the old, original ponies, even though the writing and characterization for that program truly can’t compare to the new G4. G1 still has its charm for me.
And so, here you have some of my favorite G1 ponies, drawn in something of a G4/G1 hybrid style. Or at least, that’s what I was going for. I hope you like them. I’d never realized before doing this character sheet, just how much “pink” dominates these ponies’ color schemes. XD
More character sheets relating to this personal project of mine are to come. I can’t say when I will be able to truly get started on the comic in earnest, as I am somewhat divided in my activities and responsibilities right now. Hopefully, not too long from now...
Page One: You are Here.
Page Two: starbat.deviantart.com/art/G1-…
Page Three: starbat.deviantart.com/art/G1-…
As always, any and all constructive criticism is welcome.
UPDATE: In response to a couple of comments, I have edited Button's caption a bit to give her a little more character. I have also added the "wings" to the hearts of Heart Throb's cutie mark. The "wingless" version was something I observed in a screen shot of the show, but apparently that must have been an animation error, as most other sources indicate that the hearts have wings. Just thought that was noteworthy.
My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic, and its style of illustration, are the creations of Lauren Faust.
Original G1 pony characters are the creations of Bonnie Zacherle.
All generations of My Little Pony are the intellectual property of Hasbro.

I read that story that you had the link to. It's a little creepy, but excellently written.

If you're referring to that somewhat "dark" most recent chapter, then I know what you mean.
But yes, the rest of it I find very well done, and engaging, which is why I'm harping on it here.

I have several more character sheets to do to establish the looks of characters, but I can't wait to get started on it.
Thank you.

Feel free to send me a list of suggestions, but I may or may not follow it.
Who I include is a combination of my own personal preference, and also which ponies make their prominent appearance in the fanfic that I'm referencing.
Again, you can suggest, but chances are I'll have your pics in the queue. I plan to make a LOT of them.

Hmm, honestly I don't know those ones, unless bow tie is synonymous with Ribbon...
Oh well, not all the ponies on my list are strictly those seen in the fic. I may be able to fit them into one of the pages.

I got bored one day and watched some of G1. It's not nearly as bad as a lot of people say. It has the same problems that a lot of cartoons had back then. Generally the baby episodes were really bad, but I found a lot of the episodes with central antagonists to be pretty enjoyable, especially the pilot. I really didn't like the seaponies, though. I thought that they were kinda creepy.
Nice pic, btw.

Yes, I agree a lot of MLP fans who are just caught up in the G4 craze, really don't give G1 a fair chance, and just assume it's as terrible as G3.5. Really though, G1 was at its best with that pilot, before Hasbro had to water everything down to make it "appropriate" for girls.
Thank you.

They had some interesting villains for a couple of stories. I especially liked the rock dog who sings about how he hates things that are nice, cute and soft. I also liked Lily Lightly from G3, since she was in probably the only episode of that generation that actually had stakes, character development and a lesson about friendship. The moral of "be yourself" is a bit generic, but harmless. It wouldn't really hold up to the standards of FIM, but, hey, "Games Ponies Play" wasn't exactly a piece of art. In fact, it was the worst episode in FIM so far, IMO.

Starbat In reply to Happybunns [2013-05-27 18:42:15 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I liked Crunch the Rockdog because it touches the most on the characterization of Wind Whistler.
I don't know anything about G3, I'm afraid, and I don't plan to watch it. I'm sure there are a scant few redeeming qualities to it, as you point out, but I don't feel it's worth it to me to endure the rest of it.
Spike at Your Service was the worst FIM episode, in my humble opinion, but I'm sure we all have different ideas about that. The point is that none of the generations are perfect, but that there's always something there that someone might appreciate.

[link] is the only decent episode of G3. The other stories are like how one reviewer put it "One episode they want to make a cake... and they make a cake... end of story."

Yes, it's rather striking. I try to alter the shades a bit to make it seem a little less "girly", without deviating too much of course.

Yes...I try and deviate the colours in my sketches, and go for really faded pinks for the boys...
Poor things.
I think when I'm looking more at art than concepts I'll abolish some of the pink...just because it gets on my nerves so badly.

And no,it sucks, cause it is trying to plant "omg REALISM and PROBLEMS and HORSESHIT" into world of G1,which never had them. Not to mention giving Megan daddy issues

Starbat In reply to TrueMefista [2013-05-26 21:41:00 +0000 UTC]
The original world of G1 didn't have much of ANYTHING in it, when it comes to character development.
Of course the author needs to add to and elaborate on characters to bring them up to par with what we would expect from a good story.
If you try to be as restrictive as you're apparently suggesting here, then you are stifling all creativity, such that you might as well not bother writing a fic about G1 at all.
One last thing. It's fine that you have an opinion, but you don't need to be so aggressive and abrasive about it. Cheers.

TrueMefista In reply to Starbat [2013-05-26 21:47:07 +0000 UTC]
Really? They had stories on their backcards and some other stuff.
And good story doesn't equal "shit and drama in a nice world".
You call that "creativity"?I call that "shitty fake nerds, go crap over adventure time and all other stuff that was made for it,and gtfo from 80s cartoons".
No way in hell. You bronies don't listen unless screamed at.

Starbat In reply to TrueMefista [2013-05-26 22:00:37 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't know about that. I never even watched the G1 show, until this fic inspired me to do so, let alone pay attention to story elements that apparently existed on other merchandise.
I'm not aware of any "shit and drama in a nice world" the author has added. There is no real conflict between the ponies until Megan starts proposing societal changes. All other conflict comes from "bad guys", like that wizard, which is very much in line with what happened in the original show.
I will agree with you on one point, and that is the suggestion the author makes that Megan is somehow "tramatized" by her experience with the ponies (i.e. that she was disturbed by having to kill Tirak, and such). That never sat well with me, as it was never hinted at with Megan's behavior in the show, so it seemed like the author was deviating "too much", in that regard. BUT, I realize this is only my own personal opinion/reaction, and I was willing to look past it for the sake of the rest of the story, which is superbly written and interesting.
As for Megan's "Daddy issues", there's nothing in the original show that contradicts that, and since Megan is from the human world, you can't claim this as adding "shit and drama in a nice world".
I don't even know what to make of your third statemnt. :/
I've given you more attention, and listened to your aggressive "opinions", far more than I probably should have already, and gave you a reasoned answer each time. So clearly, bronies don't need to be "screamed at". If you've encountered bronies who are obnoxious and opinionated, I suggest you look in a mirror before you criticize.

I am feeling sleepy [3.02 in the morning here],so wouldn't write more, but still - you are too ignorant of general g1 lore to be able to judge if a g1 fanfic is good or bad.
Sorry for screaming at you,I am pmsing ><

Starbat In reply to TrueMefista [2013-05-26 23:58:53 +0000 UTC]
If your past abrasiveness can be chocked up to hormones, then I forgive you.
However, you're arguments still don't make any sense.
To say that "I'm too ignorant to have a meaningful opinion" is nothing but a declarative statement which merely re-asserts your OWN opinion. How about some evidence? Point out something specific about that fic that does not jive with "G1 lore". I think you would be hard-pressed to find one, as this author clearly puts a lot of research into his story. Not just the show, but accompanying comics from the old days, as well as toys.
If your objection is simply to the fact that the tone of the story is "darker" and more mature, then I direct you to another MLP fanfiction called "Eternal". You may have heard of it. It is arguably one of the BEST-written pony fanfics out there. Obviously, this is a matter of opinion, but I am appealing to popularity, and the story's undeniable objective merits.
Eternal is a G4-based story that also has a darker tone and deals with more complex and adult-themed notions than the actual show would ever touch. In other words, it takes the G-rated source material and adapts it into something that a more mature readership can appreciate.
And what's wrong with that? That's all this G1 fanfic author has done, as far as I can tell.
If you disagree, and still want to defend your position, then you're going to have to do better than make declarative statements of your opinion, as if it were self-evident, or ad-hominem attacks against me or bronies in general.
Feel free to get some sleep before you respond, if you choose to respond at this point.

TrueMefista In reply to Starbat [2013-05-27 20:18:42 +0000 UTC]
I'll just say that
1)comics don't count as canon-they are like those vector-based FIM comics everyone laughs at,not to mention they contradict backcards and pamphlets [for example,Lucky is born from the pile of toys-despite toy canon mentions him having real family and sister, whose toy was done, too]
2)dark stories based on a sweet children cartoons suck as idea-I fucking HATE people whose hands just itch with desire to spoil innocent stuff. Not to mention popularity is nothing-crap like "My little Dashie" is uber-popular,but is not good.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Starbat In reply to TrueMefista [2013-05-27 20:27:11 +0000 UTC]
My little Dashie is "not good" for objective reasons. So on that point, I will agree. But it's just as possible for something to be popular and "good" at the same time. It's not like its unheard of....
Why do toys count more as canon than comics? If they are both officially backed by Hasbro, then they are BOTH potentially canon. If they contradict each other, then which one you follow falls to the discretion of the artist or author.
While I agree that making a story "dark" does not automatically make it "good", that does not mean that all "dark" stories are "bad".
Everything else you've said is basically just you asserting your opinion; "dark stories based on children's cartoons suck," "everyone laughs at the FIM comics", etc. Says YOU.
Like I said before, you are entitled to your opinion, but have the humility to recognize it as just that.
Cheers.

I haven't watched g1 (and I'm not planning to do so), so I'm not really familiar with the characters back then.
However that doesn't say anything about how amazing it is to actually see them in the 4th generation. I think it's a great idea for the creators to put a g1 pony (of course g4 style) in the newer series. Maybe they already did that but like I said, I'm not familiar with g1 ponies.
I wish you good luck with your g1 crossover comic series. I think nothing like that has been done before, or at least not that I know of.

Starbat In reply to Coltsteelstallion [2013-05-26 21:33:51 +0000 UTC]
Actually, Twilight's mom was designed to resemble G1 Twilight. And I believe Nurse Redheart is based on a G1 design. And in the episode Secret to My Excess, Spike interacts with a pony called Lickety Split, who was a G1 pony, except they showed him as a male, and she was originally female.
But that's all I'm aware of.
Thanks very much! I look forward to getting started on the comic. ^^
