Description UPDATE, December 14th, 2014:  I changed the proportions and layout a bit so it could potentially work better as an actual poster.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have an idea for a comic series; specifically, an adaptation of a truly awesome pony fanfiction, which is a G1-G4 crossover. www.fimfiction.net/story/71660…

As an 80s baby, I retain a certain nostalgic attachment to the old, original ponies, even though the writing and characterization for that program truly can’t compare to the new G4. G1 still has its charm for me.

And so, here you have some of my favorite G1 ponies, drawn in something of a G4/G1 hybrid style. Or at least, that’s what I was going for. I hope you like them. I’d never realized before doing this character sheet, just how much “pink” dominates these ponies’ color schemes. XD

More character sheets relating to this personal project of mine are to come. I can’t say when I will be able to truly get started on the comic in earnest, as I am somewhat divided in my activities and responsibilities right now. Hopefully, not too long from now...

Page One: You are Here.
Page Two: starbat.deviantart.com/art/G1-…
Page Three: starbat.deviantart.com/art/G1-…

As always, any and all constructive criticism is welcome.

UPDATE: In response to a couple of comments, I have edited Button's caption a bit to give her a little more character. I have also added the "wings" to the hearts of Heart Throb's cutie mark. The "wingless" version was something I observed in a screen shot of the show, but apparently that must have been an animation error, as most other sources indicate that the hearts have wings. Just thought that was noteworthy.

My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic, and its style of illustration, are the creations of Lauren Faust.
Original G1 pony characters are the creations of Bonnie Zacherle.
All generations of My Little Pony are the intellectual property of Hasbro.

You artwork is just gorgeous, I love the mixture of styles and it really brings G1 and G4 together beautifully. My only critique would be on Buttons' personality, since while I realize there's only so much to go off from the show, the bit about her decorating with buttons seems a little forced and odd. Unless this is something that actually is from source material that I just totally missed (which is a very real possibility!), it feels a bit out of place as I'd rather read more about her telekinesis and how her personality meshes with the other ponies.

Anyway, I love Gingerbread the best! <3

Thank you very much!

Yes, I actually agree with your point about Buttons. It's actually a detail I got directly from the MLP Wiki. Since, as you said, there isn't much to go on directly from the show when it comes to Buttons's personality, I was in need of material.

I'll consider your suggestion, and perhaps re-write her caption a bit.

Oh yes, I'm very happy with how Gingerbread turned out. Thank you.

It's actually from her backcard story and her character in the 80's UK comic, so it's true. They all had powers like that even earth ponies. Just like the power to wink was only Twilight's to start with...

I see.

Well, I modified her caption a bit. I think it's better, and makes her sound more like a real character. ^^

Yup well that pretty much was her if you go by the movie ^.^. Also, in the series she was one of the few ponies who had an official boyfriend relationship. I dunno if you remember but she was with Slugger the big brother pony?
I was lucky enough to get the DVD boxset although I remember watching reruns on Disney channel.

Yes, I think I remember that from the episode Somnambula, though which Big Brother is which is a bit hard to remember. XD

I only remember so well because I never had any of the boys growing up and I was peeved XD Plus I've been collecting and looking at the 80's names since I was a baby...Good times :3. Of course collecting now is more pricey. I can't believe Firefly and I both turned 30 this year XD

OMG! The memories! I had duplicates and triplicates of these ponies but sadly for some odd reason the doubles and triplicates got cancer of some sorts that spread throughout the other little ponies and they had to be thrown away especially my one of a kind misfit Gingerbread that I got out of a McDonald's Happy Meal during my time with my 'Big Sister' from the Big Sisters before she ran off to Europe and eloped with her fiance and never came back.

Why thank you. Yes, Fizzy is near the top of my list too. ^^

You have some great pony designs in your own gallery too. I wouldn't mind seeing G1 ponies drawn in that style.

Anyway, thank you and yep, I think I'll do a bigger piece sometime soon and include some of the G1 ponies

They're all so adorable! G1 was a decade before my time and I mostly just pay attention to G4 stuff, but I had a few G1s from my youngest aunt as a child so they have a special place in my heart. x3 Can't wait to see your comic!

It's nice to know this generation of pony can have fans among those who came after.

I can't wait to see my comic either. XD;;

I really liked the G1 Ponies so seeing a crossover would be awesome! And this pic is also very well done.

However there is one crossover that in someways would make for a better story telling. The other G1 show My Little Pony tales. some called the G2 show (despite being released before G2.) or some times called the G1.5 cartoon.

What Makes the cast of Pony tales interesting is cause of their world is full of all earth ponies set in the "real world" & doing real world things, going to school, hanging out in their club house those kinds of things with no fantasy elements to it. So you can imagine the interesting ideas when you see ponies who are used to the laws physics and suddenly see RD sleeping on cloud. not only is it a pony sleeping on a cloud it's pony with wings!

Can't wait to see more! ^.^

Starbat In reply to StrandedGeek [2013-05-25 20:28:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! ^^

Yeah, I never really got into MLP Tales. Probably a combination of getting a little "too old" for that sort of thing, and honestly, it just didn't have the same charm to me without the fantasy elements.

Nevertheless, this G1/G4 crossover idea that I'm pursuing will keep me busy for some time...

Once I get started on it properly. XD

This is fantastic. I love G1's characters and kinda hate that most 'bronies'/newer fans are under the impression that they had no at all personality and G1 was in the words of one article a 'tea-party-throwing disaster from the 80s'.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Starbat In reply to Arcane-Flame [2013-05-25 20:48:42 +0000 UTC]

I read that article too. I couldn't disagree with most of her points about Equestria Girls, given what we know about that at this point, but her off-hand dismissal of G1 I felt was very unfair.

I agree that G1 didn't have the same kind of "vivid" characters as does G4, but there are still character traits there for those of us willing to pay attention.

To be fair though, I can understand why newer fans who don't have the benefit of nostalgic attachment (as I do) might find it hard to look past the relative blandness of G1 to really appreciate that.

That's why I love the above-linked fanfiction. It takes the foundation of what is there canonically in G1, and develops it into something much more complex and engaging. The more I read of it, the more I want to bring it to life as a comic series.

Anyway, thanks for your comment.

Yeah. I saw that article and that line made me cringe. She obviously never watched the series. I don't think they had ONE tea party in the whole series (hoofs and tea cups don't work.) It seems a lot of people sell G1 short.

Starbat In reply to mama13579 [2013-05-25 15:31:43 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. Her cognitive faculties and focused intention were a veritable asset to the ponies on multitudinous occasions.

Though perhaps excessively verbose at times, her idiosyncrasies of verbal expression constituted a unique property that sets her apart within all generations of pony.

mama13579 In reply to Starbat [2013-05-25 19:53:42 +0000 UTC]

I concur, indeed it was her inclination towards the verbose that induced liking of the show. I took great enjoyment in fact that I could comprehend her while the ponies in the show were befuddled.

Wow, I'm surprised you drew their twinkle eyes nicely.

Me too, I just love them even today. Despite old drawing style and technology used, what I like the most is the story, they're deeper and darker than its G4 counterparts. Fizzy being my #1 favorite and #2 to be Wind Whistler.

PS : Pss.... A fiction tells that the twinkle-eyed ponies were the very first Crystal Empire ponies.

PS: I also subscribe to this head canon.

BB-K In reply to Starbat [2013-05-25 03:58:35 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome, it's not all that likely as we saw any twinkled eyes in the G4 series, neither the Crystal Empire ponies have one, they're just more sparkly on their regular iris.

Yes, but I got that from this fiction and its specific chapter.
[link]

In summary, the jewel in their eyes are alive and spreading its tendrils, thus changing anything it touches into stone, or more specifically crystals. And they even took the Heartstone when the talking mountain told them he's dying and the Heartstone needs to find a new home. Crunch the Rock Dog is there too, but even him also won't live for long without its master after his future death.
In the end, when Megan reminded Applejack, she & Rarity are surprised on how the Crystal Empire was formed.

BB-K In reply to Starbat [2013-05-25 04:15:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh, of course. I wonder if there's more, like I also remember Ribbon, North Star, Lickety-Split and the sea-ponies. Oh yeah, Lickety is a mare while G4 is a young colt. *buzzer* I prefer her as our ice cream mare seller, if Ponyville has one.

Speaking of sea-ponies, the fiction didn't mention about them or rarely, other than they retreat into the sea due to the Windigoes problem and many of the land ponies are already dead because of them, leaving only a handful of them alive. And what bothers me is that the seapony design as shown in the "Sparkling Sea" storybook, well, to me the design is not even close to the fan version drew it like they did with Lyra Seapony.

Once done, I wonder will you look into the villains as well, like I remember Tirek, Grogar (My favorite) & Katrina. Oh, even some other good guys like the Troggles, the little trolls, but one thing I remember the most are the Bushwoolies.

Starbat In reply to BB-K [2013-05-25 04:51:40 +0000 UTC]

I will likely do renditions of all significant characters that that fanfiction touches upon.

BB-K In reply to Starbat [2013-05-25 05:58:09 +0000 UTC]

Sure. But let's hope you do the villains, they really lack of love other than Tirek. Katrina has the least love of all though.
