Description Well, in case anyone was interested in what I was up to behind the scenes, during this relative hiatus in the last several weeks, it was working on a prospective MLP fan-film, called Regal, headed by one Ian Ballinger .

Regal was intended to be the story of Equestria being completely taken over by Changelings, the princesses being kidnapped, and the Mane 6, our heroines, had to rescue them and all of Equestria against seemingly insurmountable odds.

But as it turns out, the Regal film was not to be. It has now come to my attention that it has been canceled. Just as well that it happened sooner, rather than later, when more time and effort had been invested.

The Bright side? I get to share with you what I created as a concept artist for this film project. I mostly did β€œbad guy” character designs. Any and all constructive criticism is welcome.

Above are depicted the Obsidian Ponies; an original concept for minions of Sombra. I hope you like them.

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is property of Hasbro.

UPDATE: Wow, I honestly didn't think this would be considered good enough to actually be accepted by EqD! Thanks so much.

You have typos in your picture.

"The Obsidian Ponies where formed..." Where should be replaced with 'were'. There may be other typos, so you may wish to post an updated version of this.

Whoops!!

I don't know how I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out.

They almost instantly remind me of those shard minions from "Snow White and the Huntsman."
Dark, brittle but sharp, and alive.

I can see that.

Do you mind if I use bits and pieces of these concepts of your obsidian ponies and shadow ponies in a story I'm working on?

Yeah sure. Go ahead.

If only the episode had had some epic battle with such cool beasts, instead of some dumb fair!

Yeah, it would have been cool. But it IS first and foremost a girl's show (technically). XD

Wow, I think you've just indoctrinated me into this head cannon, it's pretty believable and helps explain King Sombra's success at taking the empire.
Also, it kinda fits in with my nerdy belief that King Sombra is the MLP version of the Lich King from World of Warcraft :3
Kinda makes me wanna try my hand at vectoring one of these at some point.

I'm glad you like it.

I'm not a vector artist myself. I'd LOVE to see these guys vectored, as they might actually appear in the show. Sadly, the Regal production did not get that far. XD

I'd like to use some of your Ideas in a story I'm working on. That would be if you didn't mind... There was this idea I had (and used) about albino changelings. They're the smarter, male population. Cut off from the hive mid they advise the Queen and... Well I assumed they were the only males in the hive...

Starbat In reply to lizardlord317 [2013-04-05 01:03:19 +0000 UTC]

If you're going to use any of my original idea, then I would like to be mentioned, for the sake of credit.

But other than that, YEAH. Go right ahead.

I'll make a footnote. It's just the idea of life from an inanimate object shaped like a pony. Like a golem. But do spreed word around that the Lizard People are coming.

They look too much like Sombra to be cool. On their own they'd be pretty cool but coupled with him...

Makes him seem a bit egotistical, too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Starbat In reply to Team-Friction [2013-04-05 00:58:03 +0000 UTC]

I intentionally made them look kind of like Sombra, BECAUSE they were supposed to be his minions.

And of course Sombra is egotistical. XD

Team-Friction In reply to Starbat [2013-04-05 01:26:55 +0000 UTC]

I knew you'd respond like that.

My point was that it made him seem like being an egotist was his gimmick. Like, he's so full of himself that that's all he's there for. To be full of himself.

Starbat In reply to Team-Friction [2013-04-05 01:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, people seem to appreciate some of the classic cartoon villains from the 80s, for instance, because of the stark, archetypal simplicity of their characters and motivations. Complex, sympathetic villains are great, when they are done WELL, but alas, they are not always done well.

So if being egotistical and power hungry is Sombra's "gimmick", so to speak, then it doesn't really bother me that much. At the end of the day, the villain is just the foil for the protagonist. He serves his purpose.

I'll call them "basalt"

Starbat In reply to GiromCalica [2013-04-05 00:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, that actually makes me think that if the Obsidian ponies had names, they would be names like "Basalt", and "Feldspar", and "Igneous", and "Schist", and "Gneiss", and "Pyroclast". XD

Thanks for the thoughts.

Wow these are really well designed and actually sound like a plausible enemy in the show; like the timberwolves. Especially about the part of being easily destroyed by bucking. Awesome work again

Heyo
Your Obsidian Ponies jogged an idea lain dormant in my mind. Are you familiar with the Outsiders from XCOM Enemy Unknown? If not, look them up, if so, I'd imagined that Sombra used a similar idea for a personal army, Warrior Ponies formed out of magic crystal shards thatt grew from a dormant, crystal from to a full awake crystalline/ organic pony shape

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Starbat In reply to HugobertingtonReturn [2013-04-04 23:01:55 +0000 UTC]

No, I have not heard of these.

Well, I suppose that would be consistent with Sombra's apparent ability to grow black crystals with his dark magic, but obsidian is not technically crystal, so I don't imagine it "growing" like that. I just imagined Sombra cutting pieces of volcanic glass into the appropriate shapes, and then bringing them to life, like they were puppets.

Thanks for your comment.

question: a sonic wave blast could damage this monsters?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Starbat In reply to Daskarios [2016-08-06 20:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Β They are quite hard, with sharp edges, but they are also rather brittle. Β So hard concussive strikes, or sound emitted at the right frequency or intensity could crack them.
