Description
Well, in case anyone was interested in what I was up to behind the scenes, during this relative hiatus in the last several weeks, it was working on a prospective MLP fan-film, called Regal, headed by one Ian Ballinger .Regal was intended to be the story of Equestria being completely taken over by Changelings, the princesses being kidnapped, and the Mane 6, our heroines, had to rescue them and all of Equestria against seemingly insurmountable odds.
But as it turns out, the Regal film was not to be. It has now come to my attention that it has been canceled. Just as well that it happened sooner, rather than later, when more time and effort had been invested.
The Bright side? I get to share with you what I created as a concept artist for this film project. I mostly did βbad guyβ character designs. Any and all constructive criticism is welcome.
Above are depicted the Shadow Ponies; an original concept for Minions of Sombra. I hope you like them.
I will probably move to my scraps later.

Very interesting, and highly original. The overall design of the species flows very nicely and has an 'enraged shade' kind of feel to it.
I could easily imagine Shadow Ponies swarming over the land towards the Crystal Empire in Sombra's wake, the paralyzing fear they inspire doing much more to demoralize and terrify their master's enemies than the snow and ice ever could.
However I have to take a few points off for the eyes. While the red coloring is intimidating and mysterious, the shape and size have a more insect-like feel to them. I would recommend narrowing them just slightly to give a more malicious look to them.
Overall, I would sincerely enjoy seeing what an animated model would look like.

I'm actually not sure I agree that the idea is original. Black shadowy bodies with glowing red eyes always struck me as cliche. I created these characters by request of someone with whom I was attempting a collaborative project. He gave me the character description to work with. My Obsidian ponies were my attempt to work within the same boundaries, but with hopefully a more original and creative result.
But I am glad you think the characters work visually with the world of MLP. One of these days, when I learn to animate, perhaps I'll create a working animated model for these.
I also agree with you about the eyes. I definitely could have done better to integrate them into the design.

Actually, I was referring to the fact that it has a complete skeletal structure underneath the shadows! Most creations like this have them made entirely of shadow and thus easily defeated with light. This on the other hand has a Walking Dead feel to it that I am highly impressed with, and that I would be extremely terrified to come face-to-face with.

I've had your Changeling concepts Favorited for a long time, but it was only after reading Sombra's Fiendship is Magic comic that I remembered, "Weren't there some Shadow Pony concepts as well?" So I came back here.
I have to say, good job! The eyes creep me out, something about their size and unnaturalness. I also like the skeleton deal, nice touch.
I'm probably going to have to co-opt these designs for a Crystal War fic I plan to write. I will so see what I can do with these for a humanized MLP setting of mine... well, it's actually a D&D/Pathfinder setting with humanized pony characters and some events thrown in, but still!
Now, I'll have to find time to gush over the changeling concepts. And possibly ramble about my own conversion efforts.

Ah this is a pretty nice concept that you have here. I thought I was the only person to think of shadow ponies. You friend have brought a type of them to life and with a nice art style as well! Bravo!

I'd like to say your interpretation is great. I'm unsure about the differences such as the red wisps from the eyes instead of green, though it makes sense that Sombra's creations wouldn't be exactly like him... But they aren't. In Hasbro's comic, My Little Pony: Fiendship is Magic Issue #1, it's told that Sombra is a Shadow Pony also known as an Umbrum. There are many Umbrums, not just King Sombra, and he in fact, didn't create them- they are a species he is a part of. Sombra's mother claims in the comic, "there is an army" (was, considering at this point the story is being told from years ago) "of umbrum waiting below the city."Β

Of course, these shadow ponies were conceived of long before the first Fiendship is Magic issue.Β Clearly the writers had their own ideas, which if you consider the comics canon, have now rendered these shadow ponies obsolete.Β
At some point, I really need to read those Fiendship is magic comics.Β I have not touched them yet.Β

That's true.Β I think it was the original "director" of this proposed fan-animation who described them as magical constructs.Β By the time I was done designing them, they were basically animated skeletons of supposedly long dead ponies.
They were essentially the same kind of idea as the Obsidian Golem ponies that I also designed for this role, which were animated shards of obsidian,Β and I actually ended up preferring that design.
These guys were a bit creepier though.
