In the Cosmic Era, nation and states of today's Earth have evolved into a number of political superblocs:ZAFT/PLANT-Allied Nations:
- Oceania Union
A nation composed of Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the Oceania region. The Oceania Union is allied with PLANTs, and one of ZAFT's two primary military bases on Earth, Carpentaria, is located there. During the First Alliance-PLANT War, the Earth Alliance invaded the Oceania Union to capture the Carpentaria base. However, due to the Junius Treaty signed at the end of the war, Oceania Union's boundaries were restored and it remained allied with ZAFT, hosting the Carpentaria base once more.
- African Community
A loosely-affiliated group of nations and tribes in the northern sections of Africa, the African Community is one of only two nations on Earth openly allied with PLANT, though there are resistance movements, including Desert Dawn. Supposedly its territory includes Gibraltar, where the second ZAFT's main military base is located. At the end of the first war, ZAFT was forced to retreat from the many areas of the African Community that had been forcibly suppressed, as per the Junius Treaty. At the start of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, these newly independent regions of the African Community aligned themselves with OMNI.
- United States of South America
A large but weak superstate which formerly controlled much of Central and South America. While the exact date and reason why the USSA was formed are unknown, it can be assumed that it is one of the nations which emerged as a result of the Reconstruction War. In CE 17, the country collaborated with the Atlantic Federation in the construction of the Porta Panama Mass Driver, although they remained an unimportant country for the next decades and also didn't take part in the funding of the PLANTs . In CE 68, the USSA, together with the Oceania Union made secret arrangements with PLANT Supreme Council chairman Siegel Clyne to covertly exchange shipments of food and manufactured goods, which angered the sponsor nations. When the First Alliance-PLANT War began in CE 70, the USSA refused to join the newly formed Earth Alliance . On February 19 of the same year, Alliance forces launched an armed invasion of the USSA, and its territory was annexed by the Atlantic Federation. After the First Alliance-PLANT war ended, the USSA sought for independence, resulting in the South American War of Independence. The most prominent figure of this war was Edward Harrelson , an Earth Alliance defector, who was critically wounded in his last battle against Earth Alliance ace pilot Rena Imelia. When the Junius Seven Treaty was negotiated, the USSA became independent again but it didn't have Central America in its territory anymore. However when the Second Alliance-PLANT War started, the USSA again allied itself with the Earth Alliance.
Earth Alliance:
- Atlantic Federation
The Atlantic Federation is the largest and most powerful member of the Earth Alliance. It is also the country with the largest anti-Coordinator sentiments. The Atlantic Federation is a superstate successor of the United States of America, its territories nominally encompasses the entire North America including the West Indies, Atlantic ocean landmasses like Greelnd, Iceland, Great britain and Ireland, as well as pacific islands controlled by the former United States of America (like Guam and Hawaii ). Its capital is Washington DC and its President still lives and works at the White House . This superpower is the most powerful member of the Earth Alliance , often taking its lead, especially in the two EA/PLANT wars. The JOSH-A base in Alaska is also the main military base of the Alliance, whose function is later transferred to Heaven's Base , another military installation on Federation territory. Although allied against ZAFT , the Atlantic and Eurasian Federations have long been rivals, and a strong undercurrent of mistrust remains between them. The Atlantic Federation has been more thoroughly infiltrated by members of Blue Cosmos/Logos than any other country of the Alliance, with at least one president directly taking orders from Blue Cosmos leader Lord Djibril during the Second Alliance-PLANT War . Atlantic Federation formed the World Security Treaty Organization, which made every member an effective ally of the Federation. When the Second war was declared, the Federation again pressured every nation on Earth into membership of the Alliance, with most countries following suit. After Gilbert Durandal 's anti-Logos speech, however, many citizens on Earth became more open minded about Coordinators , which also forced the retreat of President Joseph Copeland (who is in truth a puppet of Lord Djibril) to flee to the Arzachel lunar base . Copeland was killed when the base was destroyed by the ZAFT-occupied Requiem superweapon. The fate of the Atlantic Federation after the end of the war was largely unknown, but it has survived, despite having a significant portions of its space forces destroyed. It was still the strongest power in the Alliance, because most of their Earth base forces were neither captured nor destroyed.
- Eurasian Federation
The Eurasian Federation is the second most powerful superstate on Earth and a member of the Earth Alliance. Compared to the Atlantic Federation, the Eurasian Federation is more accepting of Coordinators in its domain. As its name implies, the Eurasian Federation is a fusion of the European Union (minus Ireland), members of the Warsaw Pact, post-Soviet States, Middle East, Heilongjiang province and Hokkaido Prefecture. The Federation is governed by a federal council dominated by the nations of the European region with its capital in Brussels. This nation is a powerful member of the Earth Alliance second only to the Atlantic Federation in power and influence. As a result, both federations have long been rivals, and a strong undercurrent of mistrust remains between them. The military of the Eurasian Federation is part of OMNI Enforcer and uses the same Mobile Suits as the other EA members, although it has created its own series of mobile suits in form of the CAT1-X Hyperion series. It was also the Eurasian Federation who first invented beam shield technology in form of their Lightwave Barrier . Besides this fact, the Federation also controls the Artemis asteroid at Lagrange 3 , although this base is considered strategically unimportant. In terms of Coordinators , it seems that the Eurasians are not strongly influenced by Blue Cosmos , and don't mind as much about Coordinators in their own ranks. When the Archangel was in Artemis asteroid , base commander Gerard Garcia made an offer to Kira Yamato that the Eurasians would protect him from his own people (Coordinators) if he would help them, something a Blue Cosmos member would never do. Another example is the special operative Canard Pars , who was allowed to work for the Eurasians in exchange for his life. While the Atlantic Federation, and with them Blue Cosmos, also used Coordinators, their so-called Combat Coordinators were mentally controlled by the Atlantic Federation. Canard Pars, however, was not controlled mentally but only placed in handcuffs because of his abilities and short temper. Garcia has also said that he hates Coordinators like Canard but not Coordinators as a whole. Further examples include the hiring of Serpent Tail mercenary, Gai Murakumo , who is also a Coordinator, into the ranks of the Eurasian Federation military. Because of this, it seems the Eurasian Federation doesn't mind if someone is a Coordinator or Natural as long as they are on their side. At the beginning of the subsequent Second Alliance-PLANT War , many factions within the Eurasian Federation sought to withdraw from the Earth Alliance, which resulted in Atlantic Federation forces being deployed against those states. Since they did not have the support of the Eurasian main forces they were thus quickly defeated. The rebels however got support from ZAFT, which intervened on behalf of these independent movements. The Atlantic Federation at the command of Blue Cosmos/Logos eventually deployed the GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam to maintain control of Eurasia, which led to even stronger anti-Alliance sentiment in Eurasia due to the near destruction of Berlin and other smaller cities by the mobile suit.
- Republic of East Asia
A Federation consisting of the present-day nations of China, Japan(except for Hokkaido), Mongolia, the Korean peninsula (both North and South), bits of Southeastern Russia, and Taiwan. It is the third largest power of the Earth Alliance. Its spaceport at Kaoshiung, Taiwan was captured by ZAFT forces during the First Alliance-PLANT War. During this war it joins the Atlantic Federation and Eurasian Federation in the Earth Alliance against the forces of ZAFT. At the end of the first war, Kaoshiung was returned to East Asia. After the Chairman of PLANT Supreme Council Gilbert Durandal revealed the existence of LOGOS, in the later part of the second PLANT/Earth war, a big Naval fleet of East Asia separated from their Nations and allied themselves with ZAFT. When the Minerva returned to Gibraltar a large part of this fleet can be seen. However, most of the fleet was destroyed later in the first wave against LOGOS stronghold Heaven's Base in Iceland. Judging from their positions in that attack, it seems likely that ZAFT used them as shields to test the enemies attack power.
- South Africa Union
Although a member of the Earth Alliance, the SAU is virtually powerless other than its possession of the Victoria massdriver. At the end of the first war the SAU controls most of Africa. The SAU is a puppet of the Atlantic Federation. An economic and military union of several countries in in southern and eastern Africa and the island of Madagascar. Its capital is Nairobi. In terms of overall power the South African Union is one of the weaker members of the Earth Alliance , possibly the weakest. However it still distinguishes itself from other Earth nations by being one of the few power blocs to possess and control a mass driver, specifically the Habilis mass driver at the Victoria Base located on the shores of Lake Victoria. During the First Alliance-PLANT War , on February 13, C.E. 71, the Habilis mass driver was captured by ZAFT . Later in the war, the Earth Alliance would recapture the Victoria Base, after which the South African Union became the nation from which the Earth Alliance prepared for their counterattack in space.
Neutral Factions:
- Orb Union
The Orb Union is a small Pacific island nation, located to the east of New Guinea which has a tradition of neutrality and thus is neutral in the war between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT. Orb is a nation whose territory encompasses several islands to the east of New Guinea. The official name of the mainland is Yalafath, where the Orb capital, Olofat, is located. In addition, there are four cities aside from the capital. It was originally an oil-producing country, but after the depletion of oil, it used its capital to transform itself into an industrial nation. Geothermal power generation, taking advantage of the characteristics of the volcanic islands, has made it possible for the country to become self-sufficient in energy, the Achilles' heel of modern nations, to a considerable extent. Geothermal power generation has become the foundation for supporting industry, and this has been the driving force behind Orb's economic development. In addition to processing and exporting imported resources, it succeeded in attracting a spaceport by taking advantage of its equatorial location, and achieved further development as a trading hub between space and Earth. In addition, the nation's policy of accepting Coordinators was also based on the idea of survival as a technological nation. The official language is Japanese . The Island nation itself controls its own Mass Driver , called "Kaguya", the space colony Heliopolis , which serves as a resource satellite, and also another space military satellite Ame-no-Mihashira . Because of Orb's relative political and economic stability and stance as a neutral nation, it is known as the "Land of Peace." Orb's government consists of both an elected legislature, and an aristocracy of six noble families who once ruled the island nation. The leading member of the Orb government is the chief representative, with the most famous being Uzumi Nara Athha . The five families, however, do not always agree on political matters, which caused some of these families to violate decisions of the chief representative. As of C.E. 73, the five noble families consist of the Kiou family , the Mashima family, the Tokino family, the Seiran family (destroyed) and the Athha family . The Orb Union was created at the end of the Reconstruction War (World War III), which took place at the end of the Anno Domini era. Originally, it was an island nation inhabited by people who had settled in Orb from other countries, but in the past, many Japanese immigrants settled there with their technology and developed the country. It is a confederation of chiefdoms that developed from a small country of five tribes, and as such, the people who ruled the islands before the founding of Orb later reigned as "clans" in the state, and the political form is a council system with a parliament. In C.E. 58, Uzumi Nara Athha became chief representative of Orb and it was also in this year that construction began on the space station Ame-no-Mihashira . By the time of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the Seiran noble family managed to usurp the Parliament and violate Orb's neutrality with predictions of a repeat of the Atlantic Federation's attack on the Union. As a result, Orb entered the Earth Alliance. However, the Seiran family was unable to gain the full support of the military, which remained loyal to the Athha family, including Captain Todaka of the 2nd Defense Fleet and the military became weakened as a result of its low opinion of the Seirans resulting in lack of motivation to fight and morale. Chief Representative Cagalli Yula Athha was abducted soon afterward by her brother and the crew of the Archangel during her wedding to Yuna Roma Seiran , the son of Prime Minister Unato Ema Seiran. Despite his personal sentiment, Todaka was promoted to Captain and chosen to lead the Orb expeditionary fleet in the nation's first active support of the Alliance. This effort ended in a disaster at Crete, when the flagship Takemikazuchi and most of the other ships present were sunk by Shinn Asuka in his ZGMF-X56S/β Sword Impulse Gundam . Captain Todaka ordered the Takemikazuchi abandoned and remained behind to go down with his ship. After the Battle of Crete, many of the surviving members of the Orb expeditionary fleet joined the crew of the Archangel, including Todaka's second in command Amagi, who became the Archangel's new executive officer. After Gilbert Durandal 's speech about Logos and the attack on Heaven's Base , Lord Djibril fled to Orb where he met with the Seirans. Durandal ordered ZAFT to attack the country in hope of taking Orb down in the process of eliminating Logos. However, due to the Archangel's intervention, Djibril escaped and ZAFT forces withdrew, as there was no longer any reason to continue their assault. During the battle, the Seirans and many Orb politicians were killed, giving Cagalli the chance to regain her position as the leader of the Orb Union. Afterwards Orb, together with the Kingdom of Scandinavia and the Atlantic Federation, resisted Durandal's Destiny Plan and thus the now ZAFT-controlled Requiem . Orb was then created as the target for ZAFT since it was the last nation that presented a major threat to the Destiny Plan as the Earth Alliance lost most of its military power. Orb sent its three Izumo class vessels to assist the Archangel and any dissident fleets against the Destiny Plan. After Requiem was destroyed and Durandal killed, Orb made peace with PLANT.
- Kingdom of Scandinavia
At the start of First Alliance-PLANT war, it was among the neutral nations, besides the Equatorial Union and Orb. However, by mid-C.E. 71, the Kingdom of Scandinavia relented to the Earth Alliance, having been forced to join by the threat of military invasion. The largest of the neutral nations, Scandinavia composes the old Earth nations of Sweden, Norway and Finland (but not Denmark, which is traditionally considered a Scandinavian nation as the name of the Kingdom refers to the Scandinavian Peninsula). The Kingdom of Scandinavia is the birthplace of Former PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Siegel Clyne who was later met similar fate as Hafizullah Amin 's when he was killed along with everyone else around him by Patrick Zala 's men. The Kingdom of Scandinavia was one of the first nations to offer aid in the rebuilding of ORB after the attack from the Earth Alliance in CE 71. At the beginning of the Second Alliance-PLANT War the Archangel hides underwater at the coast of Scandinavia. The king of Scandinavia and a selected few in the Scandinavian government are the only ones aware of this and keeps it secret. After Durandal's announcement of his Destiny Plan, the Kingdom of Scandinavia, together with the Orb Union, rejects the plan.
- Equatorial Union
A union of weak Equatorial nations in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The Equatorial Union is largely neutral because its military is not worth incorporating into the Earth Alliance, with no space forces and no mobile weapons. After the first war they had gained land from Eurasia and at the beginning of the second war they joined OMNI probably to prevent a war with Eurasia, however, they may have seceded from the Alliance during the strife and instability within Eurasia. The Equatorial Union was one of three neutral nations during the war, having no affiliations with the Earth Alliance or ZAFT ; the other two being the Kingdom of Scandinavia and the Orb Union . In June, C.E. 71, the Union was forced to join the Earth Alliance under the threat of invasion if it refused. After the end of the war, the Equatorial Union reclaimed its independence from the Earth Alliance and acquired some territories from the Eurasian Federation . Following the "Break the World" incident in C.E. 73 and at the call of the Atlantic Federation , the Equatorial Union joined the World Security Treaty Organization along with other Earth nations, including the Orb Union.
