Description
Satin for the softer onesAlways touching, deep in love
Working hard to get too close
Ignoring the wound that looms above
Steel is for the harder ones
Cold to touch and never near
Shaping to the world around
Causing in their silence fear
Silk is for the richer ones
Aloof and distant as the source
Never knowing what's below
Never seeing the open sores
Leather for those tough as nails
Uncomfortable and therefore tough
In your face, not far away
And always looking strangely rough
Wear the texture on your face
What do you think?
What do you like?
The mask is of a stranger's face
Why not wear your own instead?

This is a beautiful poem! i love "The stranger" dearly and think it is one of Billy's most emotionally deep songs! Kudos amazing work!

This is a brilliant interpretation of that poem (and of people in general) but the reason we wear masks is cause we are too scared to be rejected or hurt if we show our true faces

I know that, and I guess you already knew that before reading this...the point is to make other people think about it. Too many people don't realize that they're wearing a mask when they claim that they're being true to themselves.

Hmm true but then people in general aren't static. We always change and therefore it might appear they are putting on a mask when in fact they have just changed.

I understand that too, and that also isn't what I'm talking about. I see people act one way in private, then later that day behave differently in front of others, then act the first way again more privately. It ranges from bothering me to pissing me off depending upon all of the specifics of it.

Hmm I think most people do that. Other people influence us to behave differently, I wouldn't let it piss you off that much if I were you.

I said it pisses me off in certain situations. Mostly it just bothers me--but this is exactly what I'm talking about with masks. You wear a mask to impress a potential boyfriend/girlfriend or a manager/boss/etc. (At least, that's the best example I can come up with.) It's just annoying that people feel like they have to and that it's normal--I try to be mostly the same around everyone, no need for a facade to hide who/what I really am.

I get your point and it's annoying indeed sometimes but I do put on façades I'm afraid. I'm completely different with friends than my family. When I'm around people I'm not 'secure' with I don't show off my whole personality only aspects of it. If you understand what I mean

I do understand. And I didn't say that I don't wear these masks, I just said that I try to avoid it; sometimes I'm just too distracted by something else to put in the effort take off the mask that automatically flies on.

Yeah, I think it might be a part of human nature to hide behind masks cause everyone seems to do it and in some situations it makes sense to do it

See, that's part of what bothers me about it; I don't think it's human nature, I think it's societal. Therefore, it's avoidable and possibly definably unhealthy. I'm not sure, though.
And yes, in some situations it does make sense, and I always find it distasteful when I catch myself.

I believe it is human nature cause for example my dog behaves differently with me than if I leave her with a stranger to look after and even little children behave differently with different people but I can understand why you find it annoying though.
