Description
Commission for ginger85125The AT-94 Aurora, the World's first Nuclear Powered Multi-purpose Aircraft (It is (for Alternate Universe). The aircraft powered by nuclear energy. a nuclear reactor could be used to power an aircraft. It is the largest and heaviest military aircraft, the fastest wide-body gunship-transport aircraft in use and the largest and heaviest delta wing airplane ever flown. Powered by four powerful turbofan engines, the design was the first remains the world's largest nuclear-powered aircraft to date.
Design and development
The Alliance Air Force was mainly reliant on what resources they could seize or purchase through various proxies and fronts. They have a good team of talent on board with years of experience which kept a fleet of mostly Eastern Bloc derived aircraft in the sky.
In the 2020's the Alliance set out to design and build it's own aircraft for the specific function of supporting Special Forces Task Force in operations around the world. Specifications came from the soon to be Wolfpack leader, Commander Alena Svetlana for the qualities she would find desirable, these included but not limited to living space for Operatives to live in, command & briefing room, room to fit for LAVs which would support infantry on the ground, some protection during hot landings & take off and for any airframe to be faster than anything else currently in service.
The Alliance Aeronautical Bureau and Alliance Energy Division were tasked with designing an effective powerplant for a fast Cargo Plane which would resemble an older Soviet design on appearance and rely upon a TU-144 inspired wing. With help from various Alliance Spies in different Ministries of Defence and major Aircraft Manufacturers they had a hybrid power plant combining the raw power of the Kuznetsov NK-32 and the currently discarded potential of the General Electric J87 Nuclear Turbojet. End result was the NK-94-N, which compared to the original NK engine resulted in roughly 3 times the thrust and unlike the J87 wouldn't be scrapped from service.
During trials on the first available prototype airframe they found that the aircraft when loaded with appropriate cargo load (2 25 tonne LAVs) could reach MACH 1.8 comfortably, anything faster would mean flight characteristics were rougher. At lower altitude flying under the radar MACH 1.1 was the preferred cruise speed, test Pilots were satisfied they could make appropriate maneuvers at either speed, they could perform fast and short take offs and land in a relatively short space but was able to also do this off rough unpaved and unprepared runways.
In 2027 the prototype concluded all it's trails with flying colours, a production batch of 5 aircraft entered service with 4 going to The Wolfpack Task Force, that fifth aircraft rolled out off the production line with various other modifications. The production aircraft were equipped with radar absorbing outer plates and had a radar signature of a light aircraft, then there were multiple gun turrets covering certain areas of the aircraft which were there for covering fire for hot take offs and landings but could shoot down some threats in the skies.
Operational history
First combat deployment of the AT-94 was during the surprise CANF attack on Northern Vietnam in the same year, Wolfpack were deployed as part of an Alliance QRF to the attack. Vietnamese forces were caught flatfooted when Tanks rolled across the border and Hanoi was within strike distance, Wolfpack were dropped in with LAVs and a variety of Anti Tank weapons to cover the Eastern Approach to the city as the Vietnamese were stretched thin in that region protecting the capital. AT-94s were able to drop the teams in fast and established a foothold in key positions before the CANF Tanks rolled unwittingly into a kill box which halted their push towards Hanoi and brought much needed time for Reinforcements to come up and push CANF back to the boarders.
Sightings of Concorde over Western Countries and the TU-144 in Ex Eastern Bloc nations rose significantly when the Alliance fielded more AT-94s across the world. Intelligence Agencies and Observers were quite interested in AT-94 as it was unlike anything else anyone had in service, they wanted to get closer but the Alliance were able to keep potential snoops away. But the US Airforce wanted their own supersonic transport which ended up being a joint venture between Lockheed & Boeing with a B-1 Lancer acting as a basis with a large enough cargo bay, the RAF ended up placing purchases as well as various other nations, then the Russians commissioned their own with a TU-160 being modified.
In late 2030 when the Alliance came out of the Shadows and joined the UN the world got a 'proper' look at the Alliance as a member state, the AT-94 was the main focus of debate with concerns raised over the Nuclear capabilities and the potential they could easily go from Cargo Plane to Nuclear Bomb. Alliance engineers had backup cooling systems in place and when tested with UN Representatives present they were satisfied with emergency systems onboard which would prevent a airborne meltdown.
During the Shadow Wars the Alliance had developed a few variants based of the AT-94, they had a version developed to be high flying command and communications platform which could also conduct surveillance over a hot zone, this also came from a similar project to develop a potential airliner with the rear end changed like an AN-10. Then there was a proposed Strategic Transport with less space for crew & passengers but more space for potential tanks, this was eliminated as a real development due to weight constraints on the airframe. There was a clear cut design which despite plenty of alterations and revisions became a world winner. a CAS platform with various munitions to support ground teams and even go on the offensive against a wide range of targets, this line of development also led to the Alliance Air Force backing a production batch of AT-94 Bombers with the ability to carry various munitions from free fall bombs to cruise missiles which became desperately needed as it's limited fleet of acquired TU-22Ms were slowly falling apart.
Variants
After the Shadow Wars concluded AT-94s were still a common enough sight across the world, ferrying men and equipment when time was limited, often flying into and around Zed Outbreak Zones to help combat the huge hoards of Zed. (Zombies produced by a Shadow group backing CANF) A handful of AT-94s were decommissioned and went on display at Notable Aircraft Museums with 2 landing for at IWM Duxford a part of their 'Shadow Wars' Exhibit which saw the Alliance donated many items to. The Alliance also fielded it as Airliner for very select charter services as most Civil Aviation groups still weren't keen on the powerplant despite the UN saying they were safe. A modified AT-94 which was converted to a Luxury Jetliner saw joint service with the RAF and Alliance as a Royal Charter Jetliner, Passenger compartment was made bigger and more luxurious with the cargo bay being retained for personal vehicles of Royal Family members, the main reason behind this joint operation was that the 3 Wolfpack members were made honorary Royals and eventually it was discovered one of them had old Royal blood in them from hundreds of years ago.
