Description
[quick overview]Europa is one of the Galilean Moons (Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa) of Jupiter. With a very thin mainly-oxygen atmosphere, Europa is primarily composed of silicate rock, and lineae are noticeably present on its surface. In addition, it is generally agreed that Europa has a sub-surface ocean with an estimated depth about 40 to 100 miles, or 60 to 150 kilometers. Despite Europa being about -160 °C (about -260 °F) at the equator on average, the ocean remains liquid, possibly due to tidal heating. Europa may contain twice the amount of water than the Earth.
In the past, starting with the Jupiter flybys of Pioneer 10 and 11, and Voyager 1 and 2, Europa was observed. Arriving to Jupiter in December 7, 1995, the Galileo spacecraft, which orbited Jupiter for 8 years, had also studied Europa and supported the evidence of Europa's water.
As of today, the ESA's JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) spacecraft is expected to reach Jupiter in July of 2031 and study Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. In addition, the Europa Clipper is a mission currently in development by NASA which is planned to study Europa.
Europa is often brought up with the topic of the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
