Description
The seventh planet from the Sun; discovered on March 13, 1781 by William Herschel. Most of the planet's mass is composed of materials such as water, methane, and ammonia. Uranus has a tilt of 97.7 degrees, and the believed explanation for this is due to an Earth-sized protoplanet that collided with Uranus in the past. Temperatures on Uranus are cold, the lowest recorded being about -370F (about -233C) It has 27 known moons, the largest being Titania. (Why does Google keep saying its Triton?).
The name Uranus originates from the Greek god of the sky. William Herschel originally wanted to name his discovery after King George III, but that was unsuccessful.
and of course, there's all the jokes about its name
So far, the only spacecraft to visit Uranus was Voyager 2 (also visited Neptune) making its closest approach on January 24, 1986. Hopefully there'll be more missions in the future.
