Description
This is NOT a photograph!Just incase anyone was wondering why I haven't posted very much this summer....it's because this has been hanging over my head the majority of it. ^_^
Now it is FINALLY Finished!!
Time: 48 hours
Medium: Pencil (5H-4B)
Paper: 18"x24" Illustration Board
Muse: Archives of Natalie and Andrew both (you would not believe how much different music I listened to, and not one of them was from the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack ^.^')
3 references were used
This was a commission piece, subject matter of my choice. I can't wait to see his reaction to it.

wow, the details and the realism is very well done. there is something that makes a piece like this better than a photograph, the construction, thought, motive and process all seem more evident and apparent in work like this. I applaud your resolve, but money can be a great motivator, hehe.

haha. Commissions that large have their benefits and downfalls. I didn't draw anything for a good 6 months after that deal. I was completely burned out. Just recently I've been trying to get back into it doing things that don't require much: like working on assets for someone else's school project and using textures vs. paint to color. My skills have ebbed and I really need to get back in the habit to sharpen it back up.

i made it on a 9x16 in sheet of paper... not sure what kind of paper... if its bristol board or not. i dunno, i just bought a pack of them.
and yeah, pencils... 6B, 4B, 3B, and even some Hs, like 3 and 4Hs
roughly 10 hrs!

Oh, just a question: did you use also some tissue to soften the shadows?

one other thing, you specify shadows. THOSE were ONLY accomplished by layers. They all started very light and gradually grew darker as i added layers of darker and darker pencil. Using something to blend, say a tissue, rubbing stick, or finger, will destroy the gradual gradient. Use layers.

actually i used my finger, which is usually shunned in the art world because it leaves oils behind and can make the pencil permanent if you ever want to erase it. I just find i have more control. I used a very light pencil to get the shade i wanted, then used my finger to blend it. Using tissue or blending sticks can mark darker on light surfaces because they've blended so many things previously and i didn't want any marks of that kind, plus it can also blend in streaks. tissue would be your best bet for blending if you had to use something, but still, you don't always have the control over the color or precision.
