Description Malen stood in the cramped maintenance tunnel of his Blackbird cruiser, his hands and forehead planted flat against the cold bulkhead of the gravimetric static parser. His teeth ground with an audible crack as his pale skin beaded with sweat and discomfort. Dripping from his mouth was spittle that he watched with wide eyes puddle on the metallic ground at his feet. This was it, he had finally done it. His relief from the stresses of capsuleer life had become his demon. The Blue Pill was now his master and he was beginning to accept that. Malen smiled slightly as he thought of all the ISK he had been blessed with from his birthright as a capsuleer. His own clone records had started to copy his illness in recent months. Escaping from this was not an option for him.

Malen slid down the wall and landed on his knees loudly as he went into a dark trance. The pushers that had started him on this before his academy days told him that it was a euphoric hallucinogen with small side effects. What they didn’t mention was that the withdrawals and overdoses consisted of nothing but the side effects and removed bliss from the equation completely. Tears started to well up in Malen’s eyes as Jin watched him from a distance down the hall.

Jin Fae’Xao, a good friend of Malen’s watched with pity and slight disgust at his comrade's breakdown. He held an empty bottle of what was once filled with Malen’s blue pill boosters. Jin’s face was crossed with an angry glare as he threw the bottle at Malen’s head with some force. “What in the fuck is wrong with you? Do you even know who you are anymore!?” roared Jin. As he yelled he quickly walked towards Malen with the look of violent intent. He heaved Malen to his feet and hauled him towards the bathroom. Malen could do nothing but laugh through his tears, unsure of what was actually happening around him he said “Jin, you should probably kill me, it’s a good plan.” While Jin dropped Malen on his knees in the cold and sterile shower room, he slapped Malen with such force that Malen spun and dropped flat to the wet ground. Jin stared blankly down at him for about a minute, wondering when everything had changed for the worst. He then made his way out and towards the hangar lounge area. “I need a beer” he murmured under his breath as he walked.

After a few hours, Malen started to wake up from his cold and wet predicament. He felt pain in his head and was severely dehydrated. His vision was blurred and he didn’t know where he was. He heard a voice from across the room as something was shoved in his face. “Here, drink this” said Jin as he handed him a bottle of water. Malen took the water and responded “What the fuck happened?” “I punched you.” Informed Jin. The addict nodded and drank his water as he thought silently to himself, trying to remember what happened.

A few moments passed as Jin broke the silence “We need to do something Malen… We need to do something about this now.” Malen thought about this for a second, “I don’t think you understand the pressure I’m under, Jin. How could you? You have no responsibilities, and nobody is relying on you for their survival or financial security.” Malen stood and started to pace with fervor in his voice “The tribunal does nothing but sit in their offices and make decisions while I’m out in the solar systems risking my ships and crew for their safety! My clones are tainted by chemical imbalances and my patience is wearing thin with Laskin and Seranic.” He stopped and looked at Jin with anger in his eyes “Those two sit in their industrials thinking they know the inner workings of the capsuleer race. They think that just by their birthright, they are gods among men.” Jin inquired “capsuleer race?” On a rant, Malen quickly responded “Yes, the capsuleer race. There is no difference in the bloodlines anymore, we’re all the same, the only humans we differ from are those not blessed with the power to run pod technology.” He calmed a bit, taking a breath and a long drink from his water bottle. Captain Fae’Xao thought for a moment, sitting in his metal chair awkwardly placed in the shower room, he finally spoke “Change it then… You said it yourself, the boundaries of capsuleers and lesser humans are the only ones that matter anymore, why do you need to fight for these primates if it’s doing nothing but destroying you.” Malen stared at Jin, starting to understand, a smile slowly formed on his pale face “I don’t hate Eden Federal Recon, but I have no love for it anymore. The federation nurtured me, but fighting for it has done nothing but destroy me.” Sensing the change in Malen’s disposition, Jin stood up “I’ve flown with you for many years, Malen. You’re one of the best fleet commanders I’ve ever flown under in all my time as a capsuleer. The only reason I flew in E.F.R.’s fleets was because you were there. I’ve never cared about the federation, or the faction war. I’ve always yearned for a truer freedom, and I have a feeling that you have too. Slaving to the federation is not our job anymore.”

The two capsuleers knew what they had to do, somehow they both knew they would end up this way, it was just a matter of time. It was just a matter of going over the edge. Captain Nenokal couldn’t help but hear the voice of Marcel Bigeard echo in his head as he ordered his crew members to pack up his ship to depart. He undocked, setting his destination to meet with Lexa Hellfury. Malen was off to sign his new contract of employment in person.

[[This was an illustration I did to accompany a fanfiction for EVE Online. Took about 3 hours once the concept was achieved on paper. I'm happy with it. ^_^

Fanfic was written by Andrew aka (which is awesome btw)]]
