Suddenly we have an unknowing micro-family reunion going on here between very, VERY distant cousins: one is a security gambler suffering from a mild alcohol problem, the other is a toaster repairpony suffering from a drug addiction.

The differences that I notice when it comes to addiction between the pair.
Littlepip had an addiction brought about by a desire to over use a medication in a need to help others. She took the Mintals in order to think better and be more logical and intelligent to better ensure her friends safety. Eventually though it became a crutch she relied on due to withdrawls making her feel like she needed it for every little thing. the problem soon caused issues for herfriends and with Homage's help she eventually over comes it entirely, with some medical assistance to boot.
Blackjack has a drinking problem but sees it as the only truely free vice she can afford in the hell that is the Equestrian wasteland. Particularly when such things help her lose fear, gain immense clarity and enough of abuzz that she can act in perfect harmony with her own plans with no need to second guess herself. while you would THINK this would cause rather large problems, DRUNK Blackjack is a bit more relaxed and calmer than normal, but is about fifty percent more capable in battle. Drunk, singing Blackjack took out an entire squadren of HIRED mercs, without any items, weapons, or armor using her WITS, Psycological war fare, advanced Strategy, and combat talant. The only real downside being the epic hangover after words that may take her out of action for a while. Bj is totally aware that she does have a problem and addiction, but embraces the fault as a manner of staying herself and sane in a world full of death and torment.

and it is because of characters traits like them that make reading the events of their stories all the more interesting. Far more interesting than any of the overpowered female characters I've seen like Captain Marvel and Rey that are too overpowered for their own good and have no sensible life goals or obstacles to try and overcome to be a better person on their Heroes' Journey.
