Although, really, he's not drinking and talking at the same time. Part of comic language is that you can show a character talking and doing an action, without implying that they're doing it at the same time. Most people naturally imagine how it would be possible to do something considered "impossible" such as, in this example, drinking and talking. So yeah... The magic of comic language.

They are.
A lot of old legends with spirits and such revolve around reflected surfaces such a mirrors and old mirrors gold for those kinds of things. Souls on the other side of the mirror, trapped, evil or good. Even image stealers (sp).
